Hospitals Criticized for Indoor Air Pollution
A report released by Song Joo-hee, a researcher at the graduate school of public health at Seoul National University (SNU), indicated the hospitals' outdated ventilation systems, with their poor movement of air between inside spaces and the outside, may have contributed to the concentration of the pollutants. "Pollutants such as aerobic bacteria or molds could have a critical effect on the health of patients suffering respiratory conditions such as asthma and could possibly be the cause of secondary infections," Song said....
... The wards also showed a high level of mold contamination, averaging 211 CFU from 9 p.m. to noon and 288 CFU between 9 p.m. and midnight. The maximum allowable level established by the World Health Organization (WHO) for indoor mold contamination is 150 CFU.
"After I conducted the studies in 2003, I went back to the hospitals where I found no change in their ventilation systems and little effort to improve the circulation of air in their facilities. It's hard to believe that the conditions are now better," said Song.
