Does anyone have any knowledge about BCM Language Center in Gwangju. I have read terrible things about BCM, and I have read some good things. It seems that the opinion depends on the location of the school. Please if you know anything about this one, good, bad, mediocre, please reply! Thanks!

Dear Jade Kitty:

While BCM is supposed to be a "chain" (like McDonald's), it's not.
If someone wants to open a BCM institute, they pay a lump sum up front to Mr. Min Byung-chol.
After that, they can do whatever they want.
The first BCM is in Gangnam, and from what I know (only hearsay), it's not a bad place to work.
I worked at the BCM in Sanggye-dong, Nowon-gu.
It was terrible and I hated it.
On average, we had one "midnight run" per month.
(A "midnight run" is when a teacher can't take it anymore, and leaves the country in the middle of the night.)
I finished my one-year contract, and found a new job.
Strangely, several years later, I met a teacher who worked there, and he seemed quite satisfied.
I guess those in charge learned something.
My long-winded point is:
1. Each BCM is different.
Call them and ask them for contact information about teachers who used to work there.
2. Things can get better (though unfortunately, the overwhelming trend seems to be that things get worse).

Hope this helps.

I'll make a long reply very short for you.

1) Get the e-mail addresses of SEVERAL teachers who are working there now.
2) Talking to a teacher on the phone (when they call from the school) is meaningless. The boss WILL be standing right there and they WON'T tell you the truth when he is in earshot. They will be much more honest when the boss isn't looking.
3) E-mail them and ask them specific questions about the hakwan re: working conditions, pension, medical, pay and deductions, hours of work, classes, vacations and anything else that may concern you.

It's real easy. Do your PROPER homework or suffer the consequences.
