No big deal...Just curious for the moment

But Ive finally after 3months got my visa(did the fuku run), and so after coming back I asked at my hagwon about getting my original degree back (my parents want it sent home for some tax issues...)
The guy at school said that the degree was at the dept.of education. He then told me i needed to get an ARC, which I have applied for.. then he says he has to go to the Dept.of education. Ive no idea what for.. I asked can he get my degree and he said 'why do you want it?'

Judging by how clueless my school is and how unbelievably long it takes them to sort stuff out im wondering will it be hassle getting this back..

Anyone know why the degree is where it is?
Do they have a right to retain it or should I be given it back?

Thanks

every time I have taken visa docs to immigration, the guys there sight the doc, photocopy it and then give it back to me.
the original is given to the teacher straight away.
Immigratiion should not have it, the education office should not have it, the school or you SHOULD.
dunno why anyone but you has it though.
Could be one of those Canadian forgerers.

He's lying to you and holding your degree hostage in case you want to pull a runner...

My last hakwon told me the same thing... so I called their bluff and handed them my 30 days notice in writing.... then DEMANDED my degree back so I could find another job.... I had my degree back in about 20 minutes on the condition that I recind my resignation....

We got along just fine for the remaining 10 months in that contract and I finally left on good terms after completing that contract and had no more surprises.

Why do you want it?um,because its mine....

They don't have any right to hold any of your property. If you did a runner, you wouldn't be able to get another job without a letter of release from them. So,if they're about you splitting, they have their "insurance policy" right there.offers zero insurance for you, should you be working at a bad school.

Its probably just in his office.

Interesting....OK thanks

After you get your visa, then get your ARC,
Is there any reason why your school would need to take your ARC card from you?? Or would that just be another 'insurance policy' for them?

They said something about wanting it once i got it, but now taht i think of it , another teacher said they kept hers for ages, and she had no idea why Rolling Eyes

I know everyone's pointing out all these bad possibilities but could they're possibly any other reason why the dept.Of Education have my degree and they'd need my ARC crad temporarily

Thanks for the help, very informative, if not abit worrying

They're jerking you around.Or they are really unusually clueless.

Your ARC is your id.You need it for doing all manner of things here(bank stuff,,almost any business transaction)and should for whatever reason someone in authority wants to see your"papers" this is what you should show them.

Start yelling at the people at your school.

that sounds really dodgy...why do they need to have your degree....???
for that exact reason i went to the embassy back home and had my degree and transcripts notarised (and had several copies made) before i left, so if they did decide to "keep" it then it wasn't the real thing and it was safe back at my parents house.

good on you for making a stand and threatening to recind your contract that is one way to ensure immediate action.

:O)

The Department of Education may need to see it once during the course of the year, but they would not need to hold it.

Your boss is obviously holding onto your degree thinking it's a way to hold onto you. Get it back from him.

Yeah, sounds like obvious withholding for whatever twisted purpose. Especially in the case of the ARC, employers only require a photocopy of the card, then they have no more interest in it. A diploma could be used for some verification purposes if submitted to an external body to assess your qualifications to determine your pay scale, for example. But... to hold both your diploma and ARC is TOO suspicious.

Tell your employer that you know for sure that YOU should have sole possession of the ARC. You need it for banking, and other important purposes, so that's why you tell him you want it back straight away. Then, go for the jugular... Don't let your employer fob you off any longer!
