Leaving in very early September. My thoughts for my last bits of travel thus far are either:

China, Thailand, Canada

Thailand, Australia, Canada

Malaysia, Canada (though I have reservations about Malaysia...many travel advisories about civil wars and terrorism??)

any thoughts?? I don't want to travel for more then a month. Any suggestions welcome!........oh, and, I've been to Thailand, loved it enough to go again...but still wondering.

What exactly are you interested in? chilling out, good food, seeing 'cultural crap'

Ease of travel?

What's your budget? Backpacker, flashpacker?

What's your timeframe?

I love Australia and if you don't think you'll ever likely be in that neck of the woods I'd say give it go. There's so much to see and do there, and they speak english. Awesome food, that's more what you would have been used to. More expensive than other places though.

Thailand is cool.

Haven't been to China. But IT'S CHINA! Gotta go there at least once, right?

Well, this is information I got from the Canadian gov't DFAIT website. I know it has many warnings for just about every travel destination out there, but it just leaves me a bit uneasy.

There is a heightened threat of terrorism throughout Southeast Asia, including Malaysia. Canadians should maintain a high level of personal security awareness at all times as the security situation could deteriorate rapidly without notice. Exercise caution, particularly in commercial and public establishments (hotels, clubs, restaurants, bars, schools, places of worship, outdoor recreation events) and tourist areas frequented by foreigners.

The government just doesn't want people leaving their own houses. If you take that DFAIT website to heart, you would never go anywhere. Read about Mexico on there, nobody in their right mind would go there after reading that. I went to Malaysia in January and it is awesome. It is safe, the people are honest and super friendly.

Where did you get the civil war thing from?

Alright, the civil war thing was mistakenly entered in reference to Malaysia. I guess I read too many DFAIT warnings.

You're right, I wouldn't have left my house if I took everything I read to heart. But that's why I'm asking for other people's opinions on where to travel....eases the uneasiness.

I'd love to hear more about a good Malaysian getaway...I really do want to go there rather then Thailand since there's not much more of Kao San Road I can see. (though wouldn't mind).

Malaysia is awesome! I loved it there and the people are great. It is easy and cheap to get around on a very modern transporation system (It's just as modern as Korea or any western country for the most part). There are beautiful beaches and some great deals. Also, there are lots of different food to eat because it is a multicultural country. The only thing that can be a drawback is that it is a little more expensive than the rest of SEA, but if you are thinking of going to Australia, than Malaysia will be much cheaper. PM me if you want to know more.

There hasn't, to my knowledge, been a terrorist attack in Malaysia in the last 20 years. Before that, I don't know. They have been very successful in rounding up members of JI and have arrested a number of significant suspects. Beyond that, it's close to the safest country in SE Asia (excluding Singapore), has some wonderful beaches and mountains, food to die for, an exotic mix of people who speak English well and is cheap to boot. Most of those warnings you cite are to cover a government's ass in the event of an attack. You'd do a lot worse than to go there and have a look.

Sun, sand, surf, Great white sharks and lots of places to see, head off to Oz. There is an abundance of interesting places to visit, get out west to Cooper Pedy and the opal mines, have a ride on the Ghan. Easy to get around on a budget. Smile
