Three weeks after my arrival in Korea my hagwon was sold. I had been so smug, nice director, nice co-worker, easy children and spacious three bedroom apartment! Suddenly without warning our boss told us she was selling as she wanted to emigrate.

The new owners told us we had two weeks to decide whether to stay or go and assured us that our previous contracts would be honoured re. holidays, unshared 3 bed apartment etc (better conditions than their existing teachers). They provided a letter of release but said they would like us to work for at least a month to assist the transition.

After much soul searching and looking at other opportunities I had decided to stay only to be told that I would have to sign one of their contracts and forego my unshared apartment. My response to this broken promise was to give my notice.

Now I have to find another job, what is the best way to do this because I am still working and not able to visit a lot of schools in person. I am a qualified teacher but finding a suitable job hasn't seemed easy, offers I got after posting a resume were either from dodgy schools or were for ridiculous hours and split shifts.

Also, as my ARC is still in the previous hagwon's name do they actually have any hold over me?

If I get a new job, will I have to get new unsealed transcripts sent from my university and if so, how long will it take?

I am truly a burned muffin now!!

Worry not, muffin. You should be able to get your employer to cancel your E2. they must go with you to Immigration and sign you off. Should be no problem given the circumstances. The visa is sponsored by your old boss: get him/her to nullify it for you. Your new employer has no hold over you as you haven't signed any contract with them.
Transcripts- give your Uni a call and get all the requiremenst straightened out over the phone. They shouldn't take longer than a couple weeks to arrive.

Don't bother jobhunting while you're working- far too much hassle. I don't get why people do that. Once you're out of there you'll have all the time in the world to go to interviews. You're a qualified teacher, so they'll be going nuts trying to sign you up at any time of year. there is always a few good jobs available, even at relatively short notice (few weeks to a month) and you'll have your pick of them..

Don't stress...go to Thailand and jobhunt from there if you want, its cheaper. Enjoy your time off before you start work again, you might not get much more of it for a year after you start work.

I think (from what I've heard it) that you are released from your E-2.

I just had my hagwon close, and was able to transfer my E-2 to a new school without going through the transcripts/diploma/visa run thing. Although, this will probably depend on the willingness of your former director to help you, and the willingness of the specific immigration office.

As for getting new transcripts - call your school ASAP. Even by FedEx, it will take 4 or 5 days. I've got five copies on me now, just in case.

If it were me- I would be looking for a new job ASAP and while working becasue where the heck are you going to live between jobs?? It would be ideal to move from your present apartment to your new apartment thats paid for by your new employer. I would not want to waste my cash if I did not have to!

As for transcripts- your Uni probably will not accept a phone request so you will likely have to fax or fed ex them a writen request with your signature. Don`t forget to order extras in case this happens again!
