Hey, that link doesn't work.

Can someone confirm if Tiger Beer's post was meant to be serious? I've seen many people list higher starting salaries than that, so I'm thinking "joke". But then, TB doesn't horse around much, so that would seem to be his honest answer.

to the OP: it's true what they say about your experience offers. Here in Korea, it's about the color of your skin and the shape of your face and the nationality which you represent. Starting, as a new person, around 2mil at a decent place. 2.3 if you are lucky.

No matter what, most schools pay around the 2.0-2.1 range. How sad, but true. I was offered 2.6 recently, but it was in a place 5 hours outside of Seoul and the hours were terrible...M, W, F 9AM-7:30PM, and T, TH 9AM-8:30PM.....I'd be dead in a month!

I just finished a massive job hunt last month and was surprised at how many jobs were available in that range. The wages are higher this year as recruiters and employers try to fill positions.

But... believe me. money ain't everything. It's better to take a little less if you come across a reliable employer who will pay the year-end bonus, not to mention entire pay cheque on time Yet there's no reason not to hunt through higher salary positions only, just make sure you talk on the phone with at least two other foreign teachers from the place if its a hagwon, to ensure you don't become one of the horror stories. Post the employer details here too and look for blacklists, as some have a bad reputation.

I have a law degree, as well as a Masters, and I make 2.6 - 3 million, depending on overtime. I work for a large company, and I should have negotiated more (because of the hours I work), but I actually enjoy my job and am treated with respect.

Don't obsess about pay. If you really want to work here, find a great environment (e.g. a job you don't hate that suits your abilities, a great apartment, decent colleagues). You can make virtually unlimited additional sums of cash teaching on the side, if you are so inclined. You may want to consider seeking a work schedule that would allow for that.

The differences between a couple hundred thousand won a month are extremely minor. The differences between quality of life can be enormous. If you come here and do a good job, you become very valuable to your institution. Until then, your education and future plans are practically irrelevant (unless it can earn money for your hogwan).
