Hi Guys,
IM moving to Korea in June and am wondering what to expect from my students? I will be teaching kindergaten, Gr.1 and 2. Do they have any prior knowledge or expericence with English, or are they a blank slate? If they have no knowledge, what do you start with (alphebet, numbers, pictures, etc)? If anyone could offer any advice that would be great! |

Expect that you've been a bit misinformed, as I don't know of any hogwans that do only kindie, grades one and two. You'll probably be doing kindie to grade 6.
Expect a wide range of students re: English ability. Kindergarten's a real treat. |

Expect them to sneeze and cough on you. Don't wear nice clothes. The better ones will know their alphabet, including how to write it, and a handful of English words which they will employ randomly throughout class. The worse ones will be able to sing "ABCDEFG..." and then get mixed up. And they won't be able to write it.
Anyway, I wouldn't start planning until you actually see your curriculum. Your boss may want you to be teaching them to say "Seven little red dogs jumped the fence" regardless of whether or not they actually know their ABCs, colours, or numbers.
Good luck. |

Just cause you don't know them doesn't mean they don't exist -- I've worked at three hagwans that only did KG up to grade 4. My own schedule meant that I taught only KG, and grades 1 and 2.
In fact in all my years teaching at hagwans, I have never taught students older than age 10 (which would be grade 3).
Accept that you are uninformed!
As for the OPs other questions -- the type of academy itself will determine what level the students are. For instance, I have taught grades 1 and 2 at a top-notch hagwan where the students were near fluent and did very advanced grammar, whereas students the same age at another academy I worked at were learning basic ESL stuff (clothes, buildings, etc). Level can vary greatly depending on what academy you are at.
Ask the other teachers there (before you arrive!) about the level of the students, and what kind of books/program the academy uses. |
