So as of Friday, dapper has been released. It's the new version of the ubuntu linux operating system and i've just finished installing it on my desktop. The thing works like a dream and with the new easy ubuntu software that'll install all the propietary software on to your pc for you (Flash,3D graphic card drivers, nividia drivers, java, skype etc...).No more fiddling around with blackdown java and all that ...

Ubuntu has been getting better and better for a long time now, and I think this release is a BIG step forward for ubuntu and for Linux as an OS. It also has a cool new feature where you can install straight from the live cd. So you can just pop the cd into your drive, it'll boot up ubuntu. You can have a look at it, if you like it you can click install straight from your live cd and have a hassle free install in under 10mins. Otherwise you can just shut it down and go back to your untouched previous (windows) installation.

If you are searching for a new OS, or you are just curious about what all the fuss over linux is. Then just download dapper from this link and pop it into your cd drive, boot up and give it a go ...

There is no big fuss over linux as a desktop OS, and there shouldn't be.

People aren't ready for the pain-in-the-neckedness of Linux. Why bother? Because it's free? Define free, as in paying no money, vs. time spent trying to make linux as functional and easy to use as a Windows OS.

I refuse to use Linux until someone is prepared to actually stand behind it as a product. Right now, it's free, and that's the answer you will get when it acts up...."hey man...whaddaya want?....it's free..."

Linux reminds me of a late '60's OS....it's for hippies.

Razz

Like I said...I will use Linux when it costs money.

Interesting read here.

... well ok then, if you've very little experience with the linux operating system, then pls feel free to withold your opinion, lest people get the impression that it's a fair and informed one. Which of course it isn't.

I find your line of reasoning here somewhat obtuse. I think it would be more prudent of you to try the operating system before actually dumping on it. Smile And by operating system here, I mean dapper.

I'm not sure of whether you are aware of it or not, but windows doesn't in any way 'stand behind' their software. Have you ever actually read the windows license agreement ? It basically absolves M$ from any liability for anything that might ever happen to any computer that is running microsoft software.

... as opposed to the answer you get when windows acts up ? ... sorry, an operator can't take your call right now, pls hold the line and we'll be with you ... Microsoft barely even go to the trouble of patching holes in their OS and browsers anymore. They are the only company on the planet who'll sell you a product, then charge you extra for a service that will keep that product working properly - as they have done with their recent subscription windows protection service. BTW I don't hate microsoft. They are a good company with alot of smart people, they are good at what they do. However I think that products should be jugded dispassionately, and on their merits only. I didn't install dapper because I hate windows. I installed it because it's the better OS, and it will allow me to get on with the tasks that I want to use my computer for. And not have me spending time configuring or cleaning my system.

... like I previously stated, I installed linux in less than 15mins. The only things I had to configure were the timezone and the keyboard settings. Even windows isn't that simple. One of the main problems with linux was the fact that people had to install proprietory software themselves. That problem is now gone. It has never been easier to get a linux OS up and running.

I honestly believe that with dapper + easy ubuntu, linux has now reached the holy grail of being as easy to install and operate as windows is. If you use your computer for games, then you're still out of luck. But if you're not a big gamer, and you just want to surf the web, work with some office applications, and maybe talk a bit on skype, or watch movies or listen to internet radio. Then I think that linux is the OS for you I'd be happy to hear the opinion of anyone who would like to try this out and to hear their views on the subject ( good, bad or indifferent ). Also, pls note - dapper hardware support is second to none.

Practically every fortune 500 company now uses linux exclusively on their network perimeter. Windows is so shoddy and insecure that none of them will allow a windows machine to even connect to the internet directly. If they don't, then why should you ?

The reality of it is, that nowadays you're going to have to spend hours at your computer anyway, what with anti-virus software, firewall software etc... You can either spend that time combing your windows os for malware, or you can spend it coming to terms with very simple concepts like file ownership and user permissions that will keep your computer safe, fast and clean ad infinitum.

Considering the amount of hours you spend on a computer, these are simple concepts that are not beyond the normal user. Afterall, you realize before you get into a car that you can only drive on one side of the road right ? ... you've taken the time to learn that driving with no oil in the engine is bad. And that running a red light is dangerous. Same goes for a computer. Get used to it, or stop complaining every time your computer gets trashed a malware overload.

NOTE TO DEMOPHOBE: I dare you to try it out. You may be surprised at how far linux has improved in the past few years....
