|
|
I've been here about 2 and a half months now...and today I realised that I am turning into a couch potato. I've also developed an unhealthy relationship with peanut M&M's. It's not good.
I thought I was quite an active person - I usually get out for a jog in the morning, amongst other bits and pieces - and when I was at home, I hardly ever had the tv on, or was always whining at my partner to turn it off. What has happened to me???? Now I'm quite happy just lazing on my a**, and I don't even feel much guilt for it. Is this what they mean by 'Korea changes people'? It just seems that there is always something to watch. Maybe having so few English-speaking friends is actually getting to me....
I also now know why that advert campaign with the talking M&M's has been around so long...those little guys really can call out to ya. |

I've been here for almost two years now and I find that I always seem to hit a low in the winter here. I turn into a surly old crank and do absolutely nothing but lay on the couch, eat popcorn and watch CSI. My girlfriend and I both get really cranky. It happens to many foreigners here, and may be a result of being away from home during the holidays. Or, it may just simply be the winter blues. I don't know if this is happening to you, but I usually snap out of it in March and begin to get a little more active.
I've joined a gym and also I've started to go tanning. I've found that I get a lot more energy after getting some light. Try tanning...it may help (that is, if you want to break out of it...because I know how fantastic those M&M's are). |

it sounds like you have entered that lovely stage of life in korea called culture shock. you are disillusioned with korea and you counteract the alienation you feel by erecting a western cocoon around yourself and live vicariously through your tv.
or maybe it's just the weather. |

Imagine if there were really anything good on TV? What kind of couch potato would you be then? |

I don't know about your situation...but the first time I taught in Korea, I had just graduated from university and spent a semester student teaching, writing a thesis, and working at a student employment job, averaging 2-3 hours of sleep a night. I slept 12-14 hours a day for months when I arrived in Korea! |

I know this is an old topic, but I just saw the title and read "M&M's and my crotch" |

Luckily, soon enough you'll realize that the television stations here seem to enjoy repeating the same seasons of the same shows and movies over and over and over again without adding anything new. So, once you've watched everything (taking only about a month or two), there won't be anything else to watch. You'll then get into reading and get a hobby or join a gym after that. Unless of course Jean Claude Van Dam, Bruce Willis and that old annoying guy from the Fugitive never get old for you (not Harison Ford, the other dude), in which case, you might want to find a healthy alternative to the M&M's. |

Yup, it's happened. Aided by my fear of being in a swimsuit in Thailand in a mere 6 months time. |
