Greetings all. I am a recent grad from Cal State Hayward and have been debating about teaching in Korea for about 2 years now. I just discovered this site a few days ago and have been on it for numerous hours. I've been trying to get as much info as possible before I decided to make a move out to Korea.
There is an ad on www.craigslist.org that is advertising teaching positions and I wanted all your advice as to find any flaws in the posting. I know that all hagwons are different and this specific ad doesn't give you a school in particular, but I don't want to get ripped off. Does all the taxes and benefits seem correct??

*Please excuse me for being so new to all of this. I'm sure these posts pop up everyday but I could really use all of your opinions and guidance.*

Very ambiguous. Look at the job postings, if you see something you like, make an inquiry. If you think a position is suitable, make sure you speak to the present teaching staff and at least one person who no longer teaches there, this way you will get a balanced view on what it's really like. Don't rush into a position, take your time and keep asking questions. All the best. Smile

Go through numerous recruiters and look into individual schools not using a recruiter. Have in mind what conditions you want- hours, location, class age, etc., and if any offer fits those requirements, pursue it, but don't place your questions to the recruiter. Ask a current or former teacher, best through e-mail. When all your questions are answered and you feel secure, then accept. As tempting as it is, don't accept your first job offer unless it is the stuff of dreams. Better often comes along, and soon after. Don't only listen to an add placed in a free forum like Craig's List. Try Footprints or TKRS. More offers means more possibilites. Good luck.

This isn't 100% correct. In your last month you should get your last month's pay and an extra month's pay as severance from your employer. Assuming your monthly pay is 2 million, and you haven't worked any overtime, that means you'll get 4 million as your last check, plus your return air ticket/airfare from the boss.

As an American citizen, you will be eligible to get all of the money in your pension account when you leave Korea for good, because of the reciprocal pension/Social Security treaty between US and ROK. This includes your contributions plus your employer's contributions. Many employers try to get out of paying into pension, don't let this happen. If you stay in Korea longer than a year, you won't be able to collect your pension money until you leave. On a 2.0 monthly salary you can expect to collect W2,160,000 at the end of a year (9% combined monthly payment over the course of a year).
