I was told last week about an open class scheduled for next month. I will be co-teaching with my Korean partner. He informed me today that the Gyeongi do policy is that ALL classes from now on are to be co-taught. He also said that he would be doing most of the teaching and I would be assisting. His reasoning was that I was hired by the school and he was unaware of this policy, which is being instated throughout the district. He told me that all schools in this province should be doing this. Is this true?

I feel bad that he will have to even more work then he already does and I will be doing less. Plus I feel like I will be losing my autonomy in the classroom. The students (for the most part) seem to enjoy the lessons and I've gotten no complaints. I thought I was hired as a conversation teacher not an assisant to the regular grammar teacher.

Is anyone else in this same position? I've been doing my own class for almost 3 months and now I have to follow his lesson plans. If this is truly the policy than I can accept it.

Just seems a bit strange to me...

Cheers,

Well, that seems to kill 2 birds with one... Your previous post mentioned about disciplining problems - giving power to 'him' will then see him having to deal with the discipline headache. If he insists on taking control, then you probably don't have much sway. Just enjoy the reduced workload without feeling guilty. All you can do is to establish who is going to play exactly what role in the class to avoid any later conflict.

If you want more teaching autonomy, then of course, you're going to have to switch jobs. But, it may be worth hanging on for a while. If this guy is a good teacher, it may be that you can actually learn a lot from him, including the classroom management. Then, you can move on. That is a similar situation to what happened to me a few years back. I learnt a lot from being assigned to work alongside local qualified teachers.

I really wouldn't want to be an assistant or anything like that. Even with my middle school lessons where I use co-teachers it's about 90% me and 10% team-teaching, when they're not doing pairs or group work. Perhaps you could just take him aside and say 'look, this may be some new district policy, but do we have to follow it'? If not I'd just stand at the back and wait for him to call on me.

He is the GOOD teacher I mentioned; I have no problems with the classes he teaches.

It's a couple of the first year classes (who have the first year teacher) that I've been having problems with.

He didn't mention how those classes would be co-taught. Nor did he mention the 3rd graders. I also have a great relationship with those classes and there was no mention of if their teacher would co-teach with me.

I'm a bit confused by the whole thing. Is it really coming from the Education office or the school?

Take care,

One of the K-teachers here organised verb and noun lists for powerpoint and we go through those with the class. He organised it,I get them to do it and give pronunciation pointers.Works well.

If its the other way round where I'm at the back of the room waiting to be called on...man,what a drag.Avoid that.

Perhaps say to him that you'd appreciate some pointers, but also, you have to justify yr position. You need to be teaching...not just there as window dressing.
