HOUSTON - Lloyd Bentsen, a courtly Texan who represented the state in Congress for 28 years and served as President Clinton's first treasury secretary, died Tuesday, his family said. He was 85.Bentsen, who died at his Houston home, capped off a long political career as the Democratic 1988 vice presidential nominee, famously telling rival Dan Quayle during a televised debate: "Senator, you're no Jack Kennedy."
|
I watched that debate live. Not so many people remember Quayle's applause-generating comeback: "That was uncalled for, Senator". For a few seconds it looked like Qualye might rebound with that one, but Bentsen didn't miss a beat, and rejoindered that it was Quayle who had made the comparison to Kennedy in the first place.
And I remember reading somewhere that Quayle had been explicitly instructed by his debating coaches not to compare himself to Kennedy.
I wonder if George H.W. Bush would have won in '88 if Bensten had been the presidential nominee. |

I had a brain spasm when I first read this, I could read "Bentson" but somehow thought "Robertson" (the CTV anchor). And from there I thought "not again!" because it got me thinking on the recent death of former newsman Lorne Saxburg, who recently died in a 'snorkelling accident' in Phuket (and if you're a diver and former lifeguard and avid snorkeller you're probably asking yourself, as I am, "WTF? Snorkelling acident?!? What wierd events happened that they don't say 'drowned'?").
Um, but of course none of this has anything to do with Lloyd Bentson, who was probably a great man, but I don't know anything other than he was once a VP candidate.
Which basically makes my post a thread hijack.
sorry about that.

very sad day for texans, legendary blues club owner clifford antone died today too. he was responsible for reviving the texas blues scene and starting austin's legendary 6th street scene
bensten was the last of the true texas politicians in the lbj, sam rayburn, bob bullock mode. he was larger than life. i too remember when he nailed dan quayle in that debate, many people thought he should be running for president and dukakis for vp.
two people who will be missed |
