I was just informed that I can't get into the country with a one way tickets on a tourist visa. Is this true?

I got into the country on a one way ticket with a tourist visa. I believe that technically you need a return ticket but they often don't ask. Plus with e-tickets there are usually no tickets issued. You can BS your way through if you have to. I went with the idea of just buying a ticket to some third destination if they made a big deal over it, then returning the ticket later.

Riverboy--where are you coming from? Canada? The U.S.? It may make a difference.

I'm from the U.S. and I had a problem entering on a one-way ticket with an A-3 (non-tourist) visa. I actually had to buy my return ticket on the morning that I was going to S. Korea. I'm still not exactly clear on where the mistake was made (with the original company that sold me a one-way ticket without informing me that I wouldn't be able to actually use it or with the woman at the aiport insisting that I couldn't leave on a one-way ticket). In any case, I think that your best bet is to go to a travel agency where they know the rules or contact the airlines/airports directly before you leave.

I've seen a lot of different stories here on the ESL board and I've come to the conclusion that some people are lucky enough to pass through with a one-way ticket and others don't get the break. I was told that in the US, rules were changed after Sept. 11th and that we now need some kind of proof of return.

if you are leaving the u.s. or canada, you need a roundtrip ticket for a tourist visa. the only way you can come to korea on a one way ticket is if you have a work visa.
