Just watched the Korea vs Senegal game. Not that it was all that thrilling but at the end of the 1:1 game, SBS showed the Korean goal three frikkin' times and yet refused to acknowledge the Senegal tieing goal in their quick after-game highlight reel. My wife expected no less of SBS and clearly said so, but it still irks me. Koreans are tiny, petty little children at heart. Yeah, I'm generalising, but so be it. Prove me wrong.
Its no wonder so many fools here believe Korea won WC 2002... this is exactly the same kind of passive disinformation that leads people here to exclaim the Korea has four seasons, 5000 years of history, and that fans kill people.
One of these days I am going to be really fed up and leave... and its probably way past time. However, I am married with a good job, but wish Korea had fewer Koreans and less Koreana.

That's true about a bias but I wouldn't call this strictly a Korean thing. Canadians are usually under the impression that Canada beat the US in the War of 1812 for example in spite of the fact that there was no Canada. Then there was that gay "loonie under the ice" that supposedly helped us win gold; I'm sure that got made fun of just as much by other expats living there. |

But all the highlight reels on TV, clearly showed up winning. |

Yeah, it is not strictly a Korean thing, and every once in a while I like to let myself indulge in a fantasy where people and nations have the chance to take the honourable and fair way, and actually do it, only to be once more let down.

I remember a great AFKN ad that went on at length about some dude along the southern shore of Lake Erie who built ships that "turned the tide of the war", a war which at best can be described as a draw. Sure the Brits and colonials (a.k.a. Brits who lived in Canada) burned the White House, but we hardly "won the war". By the same token, this dude hardly "turned the tide of the war" unless it was to make a loss upgrade to a draw. While that might be true, the comment implies that America won the war. This is passive disinformation which is not to be confused with Bushspeak (i.e. blatant lie). And before I am accused of America-bashing,...
I remember being taught that Alexander Graham Bell lived in Brantford Ontario and that he invented the phone -- passively disinforming me that the phone was invented in Canada, Brantford to be precise. Before the Great Gretzky, that was what graced the "Welcome to Brantford, home of __________" sign. Hell, I was a kid, what was I supposed to believe? Fast forward to 2006... you finish the sentence.

Yeah, but whadda ya gonna do about it? Its world cup time and everyone is entitled to be a little parochial. Also, given the fact that 99.999% of the TV audience couldn't be bothered to locate Senegal on a map, they aren't gonna give a crap about the goal. I know where you are coming from, there should be a narrative study of Korean telly and world cup reality going on, but there are bigger problems in the world right now. Oh yeah, and for the record, I thought Korea stank, Senegal too, but at least they aren't going to be disgraced in Germany. |

IF ONLY it was limited to "World Cup time". I think that's the biggest problem. If Korea spent a couple of months prior to World Cup doing their crazy nationalist thing, it would be somewhat acceptable. However, it is not limited to such a short period. They're still frickin" showing highlights of 2002!! Insane.
It's definitely not limited to soccer. They do the same with baseball. I've never seen so many highlights of pop ups, ground outs, fly outs and completely other useless crud. |

Didn't he do most of his research in Baddeck, Nova Scotia? Speaking of passive disinformation, he was a staunch supporter of Eugenics, something you rarely hear about. |

One would think that "good sports coverage" would include anything that added to the excitement of the game. And in a 1-1 draw, not showing the other teams goal is extremely poor sportscasting. Forget about the nationalism angle, it's just bad sports tv. Soccer has few enough thrills, and a tv station should not work to give less bang per buck. |

And don't forget that while Japan won the World Baseball Championship, Korea actually finished the tournament with a better overall record than the Japanese, so Korea is the true champion of world-class baseball.
Whatever gets you through the day, I guess. |

Mithrathes (sp?)
Has to relate the topic to 1812 and then states Canada didn't win. All I can say is the United States declared war with the intention of invading and capturing Canada. British forces and Canadian militia were able to repel the Americans and eventually the Treat of Ghent was signed.
I would call that a victory for Canada as The Americans were prevented from accomplishing their goals. Basicallyit was the US's First Vietnam
Also the war proved to be the basis for Canadian Identity as it united French, English speaking and Americans who had moved into Canada.
Laura Secord was an American who had moved to Canada.
Without the War of 1812, there would be probably no Canada today.
Read your history books!
As for the loonie at centre, I personally think that was a great idea as do all the Canadians I know.
Back to the original topic, Korean media is overwhelming bias. Look at how many time they show the World Cup games that Korea won in 2002 and then think of how many times you've seen the game against Turkey. Horrible officiating in the games against Spain and Italy in 2002 and wouldn't be surprised if briberies were involved.
After watching last night's game, it reaffirms my opinion that Korea wil be going home after the first round. |

I, for one, am outraged at this biased sports coverage. c'mon, this is sports broadcasting, it's supposed to be our last bastion of impartiality!! there should be no bias!
this reminds me of the time I was driving through Iowa and I saw a sign that said "Brunston, Iowa: Home of the World's Greatest Potatoes" and yet I knew that the REAL home of the world's greatest taters was Markston, Idaho because WE have a sign that says "Markston, Idaho: Home of the World's Greatest Taters" and so I stopped the car, took out an axe and said "Damn you Brunston and your sign of lies!!!" and chopped the f--king sign down.
why? because I hate bias! |

My favourite World Cup game ever was the US versus Iran in 1998. It was only broadcast on an American station, and by the end you could tell the American announcer was nearly in tears (they lost 0-1). The American team came to that game with a very clear grudge, but the Iranians just wanted to play a game.
That's what I like about British broadcasts of the matches; the announcers are a little more objective and usually learn about the key players on teams other than their own home country. |

Iran actually won the game 2-1 and it was a very entertaining affair. I think its fair to say the English broadcasters are a little more objective, but not by much, there will always be a home team bias when it comes to these things. I regard Martin Tyler as the best caller of games around and I'll miss his dulcet and soothing tones during this WC. |
