I have a few questions for any INTPs living in Korea. |

Have you found the style of indirect communication to be much of a problem? |

Did you have trouble trying to meta-think around it at first? How long did it take the second-guessing to become automatic? Any common blunders I should know about? |

Maybe. . .
I've been here for over 10 years so my personality has been shaped a lot by Korea and, in INTP fashion, once I learn and subsume something it just seems to be common sense -- I don't think it took me all that long to get that point.
And I don't remember any major problems. . .
Sorry, probably not very helpful. |

It was helpful. And it's nice to know there's at least one of us doing well there - thanks! |

May I enquire as to what an INTP is? |

Myers-Briggs Temperment Indicator type. Architect.
MBTI, like most of these things, is not necessarily accurate, but the categories seem to correlate reasonably well people. |

We tend to be literal and precise communicators, which can lead to problems in situations and cultures where we have to reinterpret and second-guess what is being said.
I prefer the Typelogic description, although I've never understood the "impending sense of doom" bit:

I'm INTJ, which is in the neighborhood.
To a certain extent, I think everyone has problems with the indirect communication around here. I think the majority of job complaints come from communication difficulties. At least where I work, everyones in the same boat.
The bottom line is, that stuff's not destiny. If you want to make Korea work, you can make it work. Think of it as a challenge. |

Beaver, this explains a lot.
I never knew you were disabled/part of a cult.

I'm not.
I don't believe it's 100% accurate, or even 50%. IQ tests and MBTI and whatnot are starting points from which to question things about yourself. The items on the test which seem wrong probably are and the ones that seem right are probably flattering. But by thinking that something is wrong and why it is wrong is an activity that gives insight -- without the starting point you might never ask the question. |

Another INTJ here.
I'd like to point out that no verbal [or any known written] languages allow the possibility of precise communication.
You could say that INTPs prefer to strive towards literal and precise information transactions, but I don't think you could say that INTPs are literal and precise communicators.
Your statement doesn't seem precise or literal.
Pure mathematics and machine script allow for precise and literal communication, but who do you know that speaks in the language of pure mathematics?
Namaste. |
