Hi, in august, I will be going to Cambodia with my girlfriend. we will not be using a package tour, andi will bring a copy of the lonely planet. does anyone have any advice on costs, and things to do? i havent bought my tickets or book yet, so right now i am just curious for basic prices like: hotels, food, and attractions. i assume that cambodia is similar to Thailand, where hotels from 10,000 won to 20,000 are quite easy to find and are decent. am i correct in my assumptions? and food? how much is a decent meal? lastly, public transportation, is it reasonabley priced and safe?

As for things to do/see - I wrote up a bunch of stuff on Cambodia a few weeks ago. Check that out.
In general, Cambodia is quite cheap. Cheaper than Thailand. The most expensive things will be your pass into Angkor Wat (IIRC, 1 day=$20, 3 day=$40, 7 day=$60) . Hotels in Siem Riep and Phnem Phen are cheap and good. Decent places (aircon & cable) under W10,000 are all over. Outside of these places, prices will be a little less, as will quality.
If you eat at Cambodian places, it'll cost you about W500-1000 a meal. Western restaurants will set you back W4000-10,000. I think the most expensive meal I ate was around W10,000, and it included 6 or 7 courses and a beer. Pineapples, bananas, coconuts, and sugar cane are all super cheap.
As for transportation, I'm not so sure about. I rode my bicycle the whole time. In general there really isn't "public transportation." Motos, tuk-tuks, and taxis seem to be the way to go. For inter-city transport, there are tourist laden buses that go between the major destinations. Meanwhile, the locals squeeze in unbelievably tight into cars and trucks. The average car seems to carry about 10 passengers. While a standard pick-up truck holds 20-30. I saw guys riding on the hood, in the trunk, and standing on the running board.
Oh, and take US$ - plenty of fives and ones if you can. You can only pay for Angkor Wat with US$. And everyone else will take US$ at 4000 Riel to the dollar, and give change in Riel. Keeps you from having to carry a big wad of Riel around and converting it at the end of your trip. |
