Study finds no marijuana-lung cancer link
Wednesday, May 24, 2006 Posted: 1811 GMT (0211 HKT)
LOS ANGELES, California (Reuters) -- Marijuana smoking does not increase a person's risk of developing lung cancer, according to the findings of a new study at the University of California Los Angeles that surprised even the researchers.
They had expected to find that a history of heavy marijuana use, like cigarette smoking, would increase the risk of cancer.
Instead, the study, which compared the lifestyles of 611 Los Angeles County lung cancer patients and 601 patients with head and neck cancers with those of 1,040 people without cancer, found no elevated cancer risk for even the heaviest pot smokers.
It did find a 20-fold increased risk of lung cancer in people who smoked two or more packs of cigarettes a day.
The study results were presented in San Diego Tuesday at a meeting of the American Thoracic Society.
The study was confined to people under age 60 since baby boomers were the most likely age group to have long-term exposure to marijuana, said Dr. Donald Tashkin, senior researcher and professor at the UCLA School of Medicine.

Yeah, but they think it's because it destroys the cells in your lungs before they turn cancerous. |

So long as youre smoking it pure, rather than with tobacco which is more common (at least in England).
Still not exactly a good thing for you mentally or physically though is it? |

If it significantly reduces your stress-level (maybe smoking a little after work instead of going to a bar) and you drink alot less after a joint when you meet friends, maybe it isn't so bad mentally and physically, huh?
Of course, that's just a choice between two 'evils', but in my case its likely to be one or the other. |

It does however make you stupid and a bad conversationalist. Did my share when I was young. Got over it. Never understand why someone past uni age wants to do this. Suck a burning subtance in your lungs. Cough, sputter ohhhh I am high now.
Cute if you are 16....down right pathetic after age 20.

Pot doesn't give you lung cancer. The study was a waste of time. I supppose they had to clinical it out but since the lung cancer patients aren't showing any MJ connection, the study was a non start.
On the other hand, alcohol is evil and should be replaced with Cannabis wherever and whenever possible. |

Indeed.
Pathetic Beatles.
Pathetic Bob Marley.
Pathetic Jimi Hendrix.
Pathetic every great jazz musician.
I will admit that I'm a bit skeptical of the study, though.
I don't think ncotine causes cancer. Rather, it's what accompanies it that does.
The nice thing about pot is that you can cook it.
Zero lung damage, but watch that cholesterol. |

Let me know as soon as you produce something as great as the above mentioned people. On the whole it makes people lethargic and useless. Not every great jazz artist smoked pot. Hendrix did far more than pot as did the Beatles. So did Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison and others ....so lets all have a heroin party cuz well if the artists and musicans do it...it must be good for you!

Alcoholics don't do so well, either. There is a difference between "recreational use" and addicted use. Recreational use of marijuana is a lot more peaceful and pleasant than alcohol (you never see a bunch of dope smokers brawling, stabbing and shooting each other).
Humans have forever sought ways to get high, and some are safer than others. If it weren't for certain political forces (including a Congress heavy into using the drug alcohol, and probably lots of other legal prescription drugs) marijuana would not be criminalized. It's a waste of time and resources, and sends harmless people to prison. At least Mexico seems to have learned that lesson. |

Nicotine DOES cause cancer...well.... Technically, nicotine actually speeds up the division of cancerous cells

I heard that Fox, under pressure from "you know who" abandonned the reform.
Can anyone confirm this?
