Is it reasonable of me to request pictures of the accomodation provided by the schools before signing a contract? This seems like the most problematic part of securing a job before arriving in Seoul. Does anyone know how I can make certain the place they give me will be liveable? Should I make specific requests in my contract regarding housing? |

The question about your apartment being liveable is a good question. Allot of teachers don't know if their apartments will be liveable. Korean employer's have a different idea of what a liveable apartment should look like than most foreigners do. You will not know if your apartment is liveable unless you talk with a foreign teacher at the school. It's a 50/50 crapshoot. It would be a good idea to have contract specific language stating what you should have in your apartment.
Your employer should provide you with single housing, and pay the rent. You will be responsible for paying utility bills, including electricity, water, gas, cable, internet and telephone. Upon arrival, you should have an air conditioner, bed, bedding, sheets, desk, table, dining set, television, washing machine, clothes rack, pots, pans, dishes, phone, fridge, and a stove.

Sure, reasonable to ask for photos, but ala the hottie you met on the internet, the photos they send you probably won't be of the apartment you get. |

Well you can get it in your contact but what if they violate that from the get go? What will you do?
Pictures are a good way to go for sure. Or ask when was the place built. Newer the better, I'd say. You're not going to be put up in style, but your average Korean apartment in a good area is quite decent. Just don't expect a bath or a stove. |

Are the apartments pretty much handed off from foreigner to foreigner, as in are the same apartments used over and over for foreigners, or are you just as likely to get an apartment that has just been vacated by Koreans? |

A lot of the time you will move into the vacating teacher's house within HOURS of them leaving...
At my first hakwon I was scheduled to leave in the evening. I had my bags packed and with me at the hakwon for an easy departure.
My replacement moved into my old house before I was finished my last class.
That was not so unusual. In my second hakwan it was pretty much the same. I moved into the apartment vacated by the previous teacher the day after he moved out (well maybe 18 hours later).
In my 3rd hakwan they moved the departing teacher into a hotel for his last couple nights in town so I could have the apartment on my arrival. |
