Hi all,
I am new to this forum. I am thinking of teaching in Korea, and saw a position open for this institute. Has anyone worked here before and if so, would they recommend it?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,

Hi Debbie,
READ the FAQs.... 1st...
I don't know that particular school but I can give you some sound advice.
============================================
Get e-mail addresses of more than one current teacher. Talk to or e-mail them when the boss is NOT there and they are free to be honest with you.
============================================
-Ask specific questions about shifts, start times, finish times, breaks, and pay issues. (a schedule of class, no class, class, no class, class just plain sucks). Lots of dead time that you can't do anything with. How do they calculate your "teaching hours"? How many CLASSES per month.
-OVERTIME, pension, and medical insurance are often issues of contention. Many hakwons fail to pay any of these.
- Ask about the housing - including quality of the apartment, management fees and utility costs. Your "free" apartment may cost you more than 150k won per month.
EVERY good school will be willing and able to give you references from current or past teachers. If they can't or are unwilling, then RUN, don't walk to the next offer. There are hundreds of positions posted every week. Hold out for a decent one. There is NO need to accept crap from a disreputable employer.
Then put your contract up here and let some of the more experienced souls have a look to critique it...
Then make a decision based on your PERSONAL research about your new position.
Feel free to ignore this advice... but you do so at your own peril. Asking here is NOT the same as doing your homework and proper research.
There are TOO MANY hakwons in Korea and they often change names or owners when things get nasty. A year is a long time to spend in a crap hakwon 1/2 a world away from anything that you know and recognise.
CHECK FIRST HAND...... CHECK FIRST HAND.... CHECK FIRST HAND......
Good luck in your search. |
