I've come to the point in my first year in K-land where it's time negotiate my second contract with the local school district. I want to stay, and they want me.

My dilemma stems from the fact I will be the first in the district to negotiate a new contract, and have no 'base line' from which to take a stand.

What's reasonable in trems of a raise per month... and how does one justify the request?

Ask for 200,000 won more a month(or more and be prepared to negotiate it)

Point out that they are saving 1 mil for a recruiter and eliminating the worry of a runner(IE proven track record)

Dont settle for less than 100,000 more a month......more would be better!

I told him I'd want more to stay and asked how much he was offering. I added 50% to that and got it in a flash, so maybe I should have asked for more.

If you are in a private school or hakwon... ask for 10% and negotiate from there. Don't settle for less than 100k. MANY hakwon teachers now are up to a 200k pay raise + airfare paid holiday for resigning.

If you are in a PUBLIC school, you should be offered the standard 100k for a renewal + your 2 week salaried holiday home + airfare and if you had some professional improvement (TESOL cert) you may also be bumped up one level which may add another 100k.
You MAY be able to negotiate more if you talk nice to them.

Public school systems renewal and wage policies are outlined on the EPIK, GEPIK and SMOE websites.

Do you have a link to the GEPIK website?

My contract from GEPIK says that salary increases are "not automatic and will depend, in all cases, upon the Employee's teaching performance and contribution toward the achievement of the educational goals of Gyeonggi-do Office of Education

That said if they want you to stay you could probably get the 100k raise.

Sweet, thanks for clearing that up. I was just about to ask that. They have asked me to re-sign, but I have told them that I don't know. However, I fully intend on staying. Probably get all the work next week sometime.

Yup.... that may be what your contract says... but when it expires or when you get your NEW contract... then the provincial policy that is in place at that time will have a strong bearing on EVERYTHING.

The OLD policy was that you got a 200k raise after 2 years completed... the NEWER policy says that you get a 100k raise or a level up after a year.

This may change again with the new hires this summer... only Ghod and the education office know for sure... and I'm not sure that Ghod knows.

My GEPIK contract doesn't say anything about a raise when upon renewal. But, it won't hurt to ask I guess.
