So...here we go again. The labor board office has said it is illegal for my boss to deduct the initial airfare out of my paycheck because she fired me, despite what it says in the contract. I told her this yesterday (after getting my letter of release) and she was not so happy. I gave her a number and a name at the Labor Office. She spent the day hiding in the office and leaving Internet Explorer open in the teacher's room with pages on "doping tests". There are rumors (yes most rumors begin with a kernel of truth, whether or not this is the case here will be left unknown) flying in town and I suppose she's caught wind to them. After work she said she could not get a hold of the woman, but talked to another man in the office. He told her something different of course. That the contract was legal. If it went to a dispute, my bank account would be frozen by the Korean legal system and it would take months to figure out. That we should find a fair compromise. And that's where she left it, ball in my court for a compromise. Any thoughts?

Perhaps call the woman at the Labour Board back, and ask her to call your boss directly. Then have the LB woman call you back after that to tell you what rubbish your boss has told about you.

I don't know why I am suggesting that, and what effect it is supposed to have; but at least then you know the LB woman has told your boss what she told you.

Plot thickens...she could be in it for the long haul..doping tests are just silly attempts to discourage you.She hired sight unseen yet hiring is a risk as much as accepting to work somewhere.

if she deducts it from your last pay then I guess you have to back to lor to try to get it all back...if she pulls that stunt go back specifically to the person you talked to and inform him.He wouldn't be too happy with such business.

You got your lor.Good stuff.

If you got your LOR... run quickly to the next job and don't look back.

Unless you are prepared for the long fight (with any potential side stream risks) take what you can negotiate reasonably and leave.

She knows she is up the creek (but she still has a paddle) and now you have some wiggle room.

Use some of those good INTERPERSONAL skills that you should have and come to a settlement that you can live with and leave Dodge while the getting is good (or at least not too bad).

If you are staying here AND you want to pull the long fight, wait until after you are settled in your new job and go for broke.

So, you're a druggie and you got fired, and you think you've been treated unfairly. Please, look in the mirror, and kick in the ass what you see.

I don't like the term druggie, but, check the OP again hovermop.

Not denying something is tantamount to affirming it, imo.

Whatever money you can get, take it. It's not worth it to sue, on your part or hers. Take the money and run!!! There are plenty of jobs out there. Post your resume and move on.

from the off-topic forum...
"Forum: Off-Topic Forum Posted: Thu May 25, 2006 1:05 am Subject: drug tests
Does anyone know the laws about drug testing? I've read on EFL Law that a warrant is necessary. Any thoughts or knowledge is appreciated. cheers"

and in the same thread...

" I'm not worried about pissing. But a hair test on the other hand...see what I mean. "

Would you openly post that you smoke dope in Korea?

OP. You've hinted and danced around a couple of issues unbecoming (of?) a person entrusted with the care of young people.

And just in case you think I'm some anti-dope guy...I dont smoke dope, I did when I was much younger, and I DO think pot should be legal.

Google works wonders for finding South Korean drug laws so it should be absolutely no surprise for anyone in Korea what the consquences might be for getting caught.

I haven't a problem in the world for the teacher who smokes weed that is their own business. Not my cup of tea, but it certainly is not harmful so who cares?

not me for sure.

However, the laws of Korea right or wrong are still the laws. So deal with it.

You're having a bad month. You must really like Korea, in your shoes I'd be in Japan/Taiwan by now.
