Hello. I'm looking to come and teach in Korea starting this late summer/fall. I have experience doing HIV/AIDS outreach, education, materials development, etc and would like to keep my hand in if possible. Does anyone know of any organizations that might need a volunteer to help with editing, grant writing, etc? And, if I am interested in this sort of thing, would it be better to be based in Seoul, or are there programs/organizations in the other larger cities as well? Thank you so much.

There is no AIDS in korea, it is a disease of foreigners.

And if you do work for charity they can deport you. Your purpose is to teach English, not get any insight into whatever may be wrong in this country.

really? even if it is for free? wow. i had expected to do stuff for free, to keep up my skills/contacts and indulge my interest. i didn't realize that that would also be counted as 'work'... crazy. you'd think with all the grants and such that ngos need to apply for that free foreign guidance would at least be tolerated. okay. bummer.

People do volunteer work with orphans etc. Not sure if its counted as work.
Officially the AIDS rate here is very low. its hard to imagine Koreans admitting to an AIDS problem let alone allowing a foreigner see it.

Anyway..i think others might be better advising you here.

i figured the first sentence was sarcasm. they don't have aids in mongolia either, unless a foreigner gave it to a prostitute (ignoring the married ladies who get it from their husbands). i wasn't sure about the second one. thanks for clarifying. i was a bit concerned, as you could tell i'm sure. and puzzled. everyone likes free workers!

I also lived in Central Asia, and like Central Asia HIV/AIDS is not mentioned here. Talking about it openly will probably get you into some sort of problems.
