Persian Journal : Why Iran Wants War

"The Iranian nation will wipe the stain of regret on the foreheads of those who want to bring about injustice", President Ahmadinejad scorned at a recent rally in the province of Zanjan.

Iran "will cut off the hands of any aggressor" and any attack would be met with a response that is double-fold, including suicide attacks across Europe and the United States, he warned.

"Israel should be wiped off the map", the predominately Jewish nation "cannot survive" and is headed "towards extinction" quipped the fanatical President.

If one were to listen to his rhetoric alone, even the most astute political intellectuals would think Iran is a nation equipped with the most dangerous military arsenal capable of challenging any nation. But Iran's rhetoric has little to do with their outdated and dismal military, their fledging economy or their detested government.

The root of the government's fiery tone may be traced to their Shi'ite ideology messianic belief in a mysterious, mystical twelfth imam who ventured into hiding over a thousand years ago.

The Hidden Imam is a central concept in the teachings of Shi'ite Islam. Born Muhammad al-Mahdi he ventured into a cave in 941 AD hidden by a gate called the Gate of Occultation. The doctrine of Occultation professes Allah aided the cloaking of the Imam away from the eyes of man so that he could be kept alive until his return. Shi'ites believe that the Twelfth Imam will return to lead the religious battle between good and evil when the world has become consummately nefarious.

We did a WHOLE post about this crack pot stuff.........My guitar, this really is wacko and not at all credible......

There are reasons for his diabolical rhetoric but the 12th Imam ain't it!!

I know dozens of Shi'ite Iranians, many very devout in their own way. NONE would even consider this notion and would all broadly laugh -- like all those crackos speaking of Jesus returning, Armaggaedon etc.......(no disrespect to any of you 7th day adventists intended).

Information, articles like this are inflammatory and I don't really know the purpose behind them other than the author being speculative and getting a paycheck, given the present climate of suspicion. So please stop this kind of journalism being reported as REAL. Isn't credible at all and disrespects all our intelligence. Like writing about the Davinci Code and this secret group whatever it is......all just wacko.....except in this case it harms US/Iranian dialogue...

Finally they will sit down at the table. My suspicion in many matters is that once people sit down in a very open ended fashion, non demanding, they can always find light and humanity and similarity. Differences wash away......

I hope this is the case here..... the Iranians have so many very astute, well spoken , articulate and meaningful negotiators and foreign spokesmen. So does the U.S. on the floor level. Though let's not talk about that asinine Bolton. MY God. Now there would be a credible post!!!!

World history has always been driven by beliefs. People in power have usually driven by some such grand ideology...credible or no.
Logic has had very little to do with how things are done in the world.
If a single nation managed to kick of world war II based on the captivating master race ideology of a crackpot... you learn to take crackpots seriously.

I don't entirely agree. With some exceptions, I think wars and the like (not including those defending themselves) are largely driven by greed. Beliefs are often used as a justification for whatever land/power/money grab is in the interest of those in charge. Exploiting the beliefs of the people, however, is often done to gain support for a cause.
