Does anyone know about this? Someone told me Canadians can declare non-resident status and not pay taxes if they do not have property in Canada and plan to be out of the country for more than 2 years. If its true it might save a pile of cash! |
You can't just declare it, you have to fill out a form and submit it to Revenue Canada. Based on the information you give they determine your status. If you have any property or even a car in Canada it can affect being classed a non-resident.
You need to fill out this form.

Send the completed for to the Internationl Tax Services Office. http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/contact/international-e.html They can also help you out with any questions. |

This site jibes with my experience as an ex pat since 2000. It's helpful if you file your taxes from another country, a good indicator to Rev Can you're living abroad and probably NR. |
