Help me out here homies, i've just been busted by immigration for working on a holiday visa. I got shafted in my 11th month by my previous hagwon and have been working at my current one for a month or so. My visa for my initial hagwon ran out on monday, so i flew to japan and came back on the same day. My academic transcripts just arrived the other day, so my current hagwon is/was in the process of sorting my E2 for this school, when right about an hour ago the immigration turned up and wouldn't listen to reson or anything, it's only a matter of a wek or so before i go back to japan and come back with an E2, but that didn't matter to them, so they took my passport and now i'm sitting here wondering WTF is going to happen. Un fortunately i'm pretty broke and can't rummage up the airfare to get out of the country at the moment, so if they put me in prison, waiting till i get airfare to get deported then im phucked.

Anyways, who's been in this situation?, what is likely to happen?. ship goddam pal.

Ouch ouch ouch. I don't have any advice-- they've got you nailed, and you're at their mercy as far as I can tell. I just wanted to convey my sympathy for your harsh situation.

I'm really sorry to hear about that, I wish you luck. What city or province/region did this happen in?

This happened to me a while back and the basic situation was that the wonjangnim had to go to immigration and get a stiff talking to, argue a bit and then pay a whopping fine. There was 2 of us at the institute both working while we waiting for the school to process E2s. We were fined too but the school covered it.

There's not really much reason for immigration to listen to .... you were working illegally and thats the end of it.

If you have actually applied for the E2 (which was what had happened in our case) i don't think they will send you to jail. If you haven't submitted the paperwork with immigration then they might be a bit less lenient.

I beg to differ, once my situation was fully explained to them and it was made obvious that i'm qualified to teach here and that it's only a matter of a week or two at the most before i will be working with my current E2, any reasonable individual would have taken these things into consideration.

The fucking immigration department are pretty much responsible for this anyways due to the amount of messing around we have had to do to change my E2 from my previous school to my current one. I have a release letter from my old hagwon, but apparently this isn't enough anymore and they now require all manner of paperwork in order to change hagwons.

It's not your country...follow the laws and you'll not be getting yourself in trouble. You brought it upon yourself. No excuses about immigration not processing the paperwork fast enough, etc...no excuses about having a release letter. Face up to your own responsibilities for once. Put the blame where it belongs...on you. No visa...don't work! How much more simple can that be?
Oh yes...a few years back...I thought I knew it all and I thought I was better than the law...I too was busted by immigration...paid almost a million Won fine and had to pay my flight out of the country and was banned for one year...that was after spending 11 nights in the immigration jail! That's another story! I did not take to kindly to sitting in jail and raised all kinds of hell...it only got me more time.
I have no sympathy for law breakers...no matter how small it may seem.
No visa...no work. Why can't so called educated teacher's realize this?!?!
Flame me...I don't care!
I'll turn in illegal teacher's in a heartbeat. Even quicker.

It's not that uncommon i have no real regrets about the money side it's been a ride. The time iv'e spent here has been CRAZY...some awesome memories and life experiences. I say that beats sitting in your apartu eating ramyun and watching star craft reruns.

Hellofaniceguy,
Good one shagger, way to kick a guy when he's down. I'm not asking for sympathy, just some advice on what is likely to happen. I call b.s on this anyways because the real offenders and abusers of the system are the guy's over here on fake degrees. Iv'e met SOO many of them, some are shady as, ex con's who are running from something back home. The korean immigration is too stupid to realise that these guy's are the real immigration criminals and that these are the dudes they should be tracking down, not a guy like me who is only in this situation because of being fucked around by my old hagwon.

hellofaniceguy is right here, and your refusal to admit that you may have brought this upon yourself is probably why he and now myself responded in such a way. You've blamed your old hagwon ("not a guy like me who is only in this situation because of being *beep* around by my old hagwon") and immigration ("the *beep* immigration department are pretty much responsible for this anyways") yet you haven't acknowledged the fact that you CHOSE to take a job at that school and you CHOSE to commence working before issuance of a visa.

You've been working at your current place for "a month or so", and your transcripts "just arrived the other day" - no wonder immigration aren't listening to any "reasoning" because for most of that month you weren't able to qualify for the E-2 (not in possession of transcripts).

The blame falls entirely at your door, I'm afraid. You've been on this board a long time going by your joined date, and you'll have been well aware of several threads here pointing out the immigration crackdown and all the advice about NOT WORKING ILLEGALLY.

Harsh realities, my friend. As for what'll happen, a nice big fine for you and the school and possible deportation, maybe just an exit order.

Yeah, you can tell a lot by a join date. Your's for instance. July 24th, a lot of posts already, and you are jumping into a thread in support of the hell guy. Let's see, hmmm, what could we conclude about that? Hmmmm. Rolling Eyes

rawiri- we all make mistakes, and you seem to have a big problem at the moment. I hope you work it out. Anyone who thinks they will get through life without a few huge ones of their own are quite delusional. You haven't robbed a bank or anything truly criminal. I would guess that 3/4 of the teachers on this forum has taught privates. If immigration is sincere about rooting out all of the teachers of privates, there will be few of us left here to teach English.

Let he who is without sin, etc. etc.
