I started my present job on March 6th, and was told my health insurance card would arrive sometime the next month. It is now May 30th, and I have yet to get it.

My boss keeps telling me it will arrive 'soon', and blames the whole thing on Korean bureaucracy. I'm beginning to have my doubts.

How long did you wait? How long is normal? Does anyone know of a number I can call about it (I'm tired of going through my boss about it)? It has to be someone who speaks English.

And... I've been to the doctor a few times over the past month, and had to pay cash. Are these refundable? Who would I file the receipts with?

Thank you.

I got my new "card" about 5 weeks after starting my current position.
I have never waited more than 7 weeks at any position.

Very variable and frustrating. One year, the whole staff received ours within a month as promised.
Another boss assured he'd provide it "soon." Never got it that year.
Others never offered, but promised to pay half of any expenses.
This year, I went to the office myself and got it on the spot.

I also started working on March 6 and have yet to receieve one. My school said I have to give them my original diploma (again!?!) before I could get it, but I'm pretty sure that's bs.

None of the foreigners at my school have it, and isn't that illegal?

Yup... you are getting lied to and screwed and your boss is saving about 50k won per person per month. You are probably getting screwed out of your pension too.

Go down and register yourself at the NHIC office and then just give him the bill and get your 1/2 back. IF you have a translator it will be much easier but it can be done without one.

You should take your ARC, your contract (to verify your income - this determines your premium), your address, your bosses address, and phone numbers.

Their ENGLISH website is at:
http://www.nhic.or.kr/wbe/wbea/2002/11/19/206,249,0,0,0.html

and the general information is at:

Wait, there's a card you're supposed to have? At my last job I just got a booklet that the hospital would print something in if got some treatment. I want to be pretty straight on this because I am certain my boss is trying his damndest to avoid paying for health insurance and pension.

The "CARD" is actually the little booklet. Has a red stamp and your ARC number on the inside page and the hospital records stuff when you get treatment...

You are fine for medical....

Pension has no "Card". After you have been here for a short time you can contact the pension office and verify your account. Your number is the same as your ARC number.

Call them up. 1577-1000. If you can't speak Korean, simply ask very politely to talk to someone in English. They'll tell you if and when it's coming.

what's the deal about the pension thing? do i really want it or not? because i heard you'd end up saving money in the long run, but it may not be worth it? i dont know.

also, is any dental work included in the health insurance (i mean like root canal, crown, etc.)

Root canal and crowns are covered, as far as I know. But, I know for a fact that dentures aren't. I recently saw something on TV about unscrupulous dentists taking advantage of the fact that insurance isn't involved, charging 4 million won for dentures that cost them 280 000 won or so (a fair price was said to have been 600 000 or 700 000 won).

They'll give you the phone number someone who speaks English. I'd post it for you guys, but I don't have my phone with me and I don't know the number by heart.

It took several months (maybe six) before I got my national health insurance card. I - and the school - had to make back payments. There's some dental coverage, but it applies mostly to the cheapest procedures ...

the pension thing is GREAT if you are American or Canadian. You pay into it at the rate of 4.5% of your salary. Your employer matches your contribution. When you leave Korea you get the whole 9% total refunded to you as a cash payout. (about 2.160 million per year based on a 2 million salary).

This is in addition to your 2 million severance.

I was told that circumstances have changed for the Brits and don't have any accurate and current information for you folks from the UK, NZ or AU.
