There is a lesson in Interchange 2 about white lies. There are many reasons for telling a white lies I guess, but Jack Richards says we do it to

1 To hide something

2 To give a false excuse
You are invited to a party that you think will be boring, so you say
you have made other plans

3 To make someone feel good
Meal was crappy, but you said it was delicious anyway.

4 To hide bad news
Maybe you had a bad day, but you don't want to talk about it. If
anyone asks you about your day you just say it was fine.

Anyone know of other reasons we tell white lies?

four reasons i can think of:
the truth would take too long, and it's not really that important.

sheer boredom.

the person you're talking to is a tool, and you know telling them the truth would just make them go off and say sometime asinine, so you tell them what they want to hear and hope that they get distracted by a bee or something shiny so you can get away from them.

if i don't know you, my personal life really is none of your damn business.

Good ones Identity. I like them, but then there is another reason that I see quite often: Sometimes, the person telling the white lie is too cowardly to cope with the slight awkwardness of just telling the truth.

that's a good one. in fact, that's the reason why i don't tell my friend that i picture his grandparents having sex when i'm jerking off.

Well, there is a difference between telling a lie and merely withholding information. Has he asked you what fantasize about when you're jerking off? People ask me personal questions all the time and I tell them to mind their own business because that information is not for them.

As an aside, I especially dislike it when people ask me about my sex life. Why can't they just go buy some porn and leave me alone?

While growing up, I noticed my father constantly did that whenever the phone rang. He'd get invited out somewhere.. but then to proceed to make some grand story how he can't do that.. and then sit on the couch all weekend watching whatever sport games was on TV.

Sometimes we are told not to divulge our salaries to Korean co-workers, to minimise bad feelings.

Some of us give a a much reduced salary when asked what we are payed.
