This came up in another thread. OculisOrbis wrote:

Employers are required to immediately provide a certificate of employment whenever requested by a current or former employers (less than 3 years removed) as long as the employee has worked for more than 30 days. The employer must provide only the details that the employee requests and you dont have to complete your contract or give notice of resignation to receive it.

What is this? Can anyone at anytime request this? I am in need of some sort of proof of employment from my employer to hopefully bypass a bad refrence from them (long story).

Yes, Oculis Orbis is totally right on this one.

From your current employer you can request a form called:

재직증명서
(proof of current employment)

From a former employer you can request a form called:

경력증명서
(work history record)

They must produce these forms immediately. It will show your name, ARC number, address and the date of your employment (usually it's on official looking letterhead of some sort). Hope this helps.

Mine gave me one immediately but charged me 400 won... is that normal? I mentioned it was cheap of them, but didn't fight for 400 won.

If they don't know what you are talking about or not sure what the form looks like. You could always give them an example like this one. This format has worked for the last two jobs I have applied for.

This should probably part of official letterhead or watermarked paper.

This is fine, but I'd rather have the alien registration card number on the form ~ this proves that you are actually legal to work in Korea.

I think I'd want all this in Korean if you're applying to other jobs in Korea, but that's just me...

You've asked about this before ~ yes, it's normal, it's up to the individual school. It's only 400 won after all...

I am in the 10 month of my yearlong PS contract. I just asked for a certificate of employment, they said they would only write the 10 months dates: 2/25/09 to 12/10/09 and not when I am supposed to be finished 02.25.10. Are they looking to fire me beforehand or is this standard procedure?

you can't really have a record of employment that hasn't even been completed yet. you could ask them to provide the expected date of completion as additional info on the form if someone needs it to gauge your experience and update it when you finish. provide the complete official version to your new employer later.

I did? You're probably mixing me up with someone else, then, cause I did a quick search through my post history and didn't find anything where I asked this before.

For a second you had me thinking I was going crazy.

Yeah, that's exactly why I didn't make a fuss about the fee. I just thought it was strange. Anywhere else I've ever worked they've never charged me for proof that they employ me legally. Seems the kind of thing they normally wouldn't charge for. Not a big deal either way.

You're right, my mistake. I looked up the other thread about this and it was actually someone with the handle of "bradshaw" who asked if it was legal for the school to ask for 400 won. I guess I just assumed it was the same person because it was the same amount. Sorry for that Smile .

You're right, but you can ask for the form ~ 재직증명서

I've asked several Korean speakers about this and the title of this form implies that you are employed there currently. They won't, however, post date it to show how long you will be working there.

just make your own form. as long it is the school name, business registration #, contact info and sig stamp to make it legal, you can request whatever info you want. it's also a good idea to get it translated so that it's in korean and english

contract start date: ------------------------
contract end date: ------------------------
contract duration (#of days): ------------
# of days employed to present:----------

there is no standard form.

Examples:재직증명서

Examples:경력증명서

Thats really a wonderful idea, and I am going to ask my Korean colleague to modify my forms according to your suggestions.

Nevertheless, the principals name and phone number is stamped on the lower right side of each of my documents; thereby authenticating them for future reference by other schools.

Thanks dorian_gray! Very Happy
