I finally spoke to my boss last night (check previous threads i've made regarding my work situation) and today. She said that she will not offer me a salaried position, but would rather give me part time status. She offered 25k/hr. Best case scenario would be 6 hours a day, MWF. Worst case is 4.5 hours/day MWF. I'd be grossing between 1.35 -1.8/month. Working hours will be either 3-9 or 4:30-9, which she said will be in writing. Even though I would be part time, she said she will sponsor my E2 visa. I will not get pension or housing, though I'm not too concerned with that.

She said she will let me work at any other hagwon part time, and will provide letters.

So, MWF, 1.3-1.8 per month, with possibility to work part time in the mornings M-F and afternoons/evenings T TH. It's a little risky since I need to get housing on my own, but if i can fill up my schedule with part time work, I can easily gross over 4.0/month. Would you take the chance or stick with a public school job at 2.2?

I think you said before that she wants to change your contract. Not sure and too lazy to look. She can't change your contract. That's too bad, so fuking sad for her.

Don't sign a contract like that. Get a full-time job. Sounds to me like she just want to sign you on hourly and if the hours go down, so will your pay. Screw that!

Salary works to your advantage. If she wants to work you less, then she can lower the salary on your next contract. After this one finishes. Then it would be up to you to sign. If it's 6 hrs/day for 3 days a week then it's an 18 hr/wk contract. 60% of a 30 hr/wk contract.

Anyway, at 25,000, that's 1.8 million. Then get 25,000 OT. I guess that wouldn't be bad. Just don't agree to an hourly wage. You must have a base salary.

I realize that having a salaried position is a little safer, but if you figure 60% of 2.0, thats only 1.2/month. I teach about 24 hours a week right now. The summer and winter camps are the only times that I actually teach 30 hours a week. She said that best case scenario would be 18 hours a week, worse case is 13.5. Even at 13.5hours i would make 1.35mil/month.

As of right now, I don't have any contracted jobs to fill that space, since the new contract would take effect towards the end of August. After reviewing some of the jobs listed on Worknplay and Englishspectrum, I should have no problem finding part time work.

*I just got a call as I was typing this from a hagwon looking for a part time teaching on W and F, or T and Th....30k/hr with 9.5 hours a week....If I was free now I would have taken it.

My goal is to make as much money as I can my last year in Korea, so it all depends on how much effort I put into this. Obviously, if I load up my schedule with PT jobs, I have the potential to make a lot (over 4.0/month) but could also burn out. If I do need a break, I could cut back on some of the PT jobs and relax for a while.....I need to make a decision what to do by tomorrow, because my boss interviewed someone a couple days ago for my position. If I stay, then she won't hire them...Thanks for your feedback

I have a similar PT job to what the op has said. I work MWF 6,5,5 hours for 1.65 SALARY, (after tax). I have my own housing close to the school. The work is easy, no prep necessary, only evaluations every 2 or 3 months for most classes. The boss is nice and lets me discipline students, he actually encourages it. I had other work lined up too before I accepted it. I have an open ended contract at this place and my other afternoon job. I like it. I work in the morning too so that 4.0mill figure is doable if you're prepared to work a lot.

Salary makes a difference, not worrying about cut classes, and not being paid when there are holidays etc.

Don't just think about the pay though, I like the schools I work at, that makes a huge difference too.

Horangi...is your housing covered by the school or is it your responsibility to find that on your own?

I assume you have some sort of housing lined up that won't require a key money or other large deposit, with reasonable rent, since you're not worried about housing. If not, that's a real consideration.

You should do whatever you think will work out best for you. The only important thing is, are you comfortable? Don't overly stress about maxing out on each dollar if you are satisfied with the arrangement.

That being said, my friend works M, W, F (4, 6, 6) salaried at 2.1 mil - no benefits. The schedule is contracted, and anything extra is overtime. He has no teaching experience. I might push hard for something like that if I had housing taken care of.

I don't have housing lined up yet, though that shouldn't be too difficult to get. I have enough money saved up right now for a deposit.

I will try to negotiate a salaried position, maybe 2.0 mil, MWF 3-9, without benefits. She'll save money in the long term because she won't have to pay for a visa run, housing, or pension.

I figure, if she hires a new person to replace me, she'll pay 2.0 + 450k for housing (thats what mine is now) + 167k (2.0 mill severence over 12 months) + 35k ($350 ticket to japan for visa run, or more if she hires from outside korea) = 2.65mill / month

I'll be saving her money, plus the fact I am the only foreign teacher, and working there for 1.5 years (2.5 total by the time i leave next year) is worth something. Hopefully everything will go well today.

How much is your housing? Do you have to pay key money?
