Hi-
I've been offered a new position that starts one week after my current contract ends. However, the new position is saying that they'll need a letter of release from my current employer. I've never switched jobs here, so I'm not sure how it works, but I didn't think I would need a release unless I start working before my current contract ends. Does anyone know anything about this?
Thanks. |

if your starting a job after your contract ends, you don't need a release letter. tell them to contact immigration. |

I'd say this is a red flag. Common sense to any hagwon owner or director is that you don't need a LOR when your contract ends. Maybe they are under the false impression that you will not have to do a visa run to Japan if you get that LOR. Some people don't have their shit together. |

The LOR procedure changed yesterday. Anyone in Korea now changing jobs should have their current employer contact Immigration and find out what to do. You now need a letter from Immigration stating your employment has been terminated and you have 14 days to leave the country.
Yesterday was a difficult day for me.
Immigration offices should be burnt to the ground! |

Thanks.
This is actually a university job. I'm in a public school now and my visa expires on August 22nd. The university contract starts on September 1st, but they think that my visa will not be finished being processed on time.
As far as the immigration changes go, do you mean that you need a letter from immigration if you break your contract early, or if you change jobs after your contract ends. My current school is providing NO help here, though that doesn' t surprise me. |

BINGO! - basically your new job (the UNI) wants you to have your NEW visa already before you start teaching.....
but if you finish on 2006-08-22 - there is not enough time to process a visa through immigration - send you off on your visa run etc etc before 2006-09-01
(2006-08-22 ~ 2006-09-01) = only 9 days (not enough time)
so they want you to give a letter of release from your current public school (dated maybe 2006-08-11) so that they can go put the documents into immigration earlier say for example (2008-08-14) - immigration will be finished by 2008-08-22 and you will be able to fly to Japan on 2006-08-24/25 or 2996-08-28/29 to get your new visa....
I hope this makes sense...
really if your want the NEW UNI job - then ask your current school for a "letter of release" dated 2006-08-11 as your LAST day - you are still able to work until the 22nd - - as immigration will not be finished processing the paperwork until that date....
(with a public school they probably don't have a clue what a Letter of release looks like - if you need one - I can email one to you...
also when the school signs it - it has to be the "government administration officer" who usually has that small office looking room next to the principals office and that "official" has to stamp the LOR using the "official large-square- government school-stamp" any other stamp signature will be rejected by immigration..... |
