|

Just wondering if anyone can recommend some good beaches to go to. I will be getting a car soon and I am hoping to do a bit of traveling, especially along the westcoast of Korea. Anyone have any suggestions of where I should visit? Even day trips would be great. (Of course, I would like to bring my Indy along...so beaches that are doggy friendly would be helpful) |

Most of the beaches here are dog-friendly, but I strongly suggest keeping your pooch on leash at all times. I've seen people here freak out at simply playful, inquisitive dogs and beat them with whatever they have in hand.
I prefer the East Coast, if only because I've been to more areas. Kyung-po-dae is a good one that comes to mind, as is Sok-cho. It's about a 3.5 hour ride. |

On the west coast, Daechon is really nice-- west of Boryeong. It's a fairly quiet beach so dogs shouldn't cause too much fuss. Be sure that you like raw fish for supper, because every restaurant serves it.

The island of Deokjeokdo/덕적도 has two very nice beaches. You have to take a ferry there from Yeonan Pier/연안부두 near Dongincheon Station. The only ferries I have ever seen or taken there are foot ferries, but someone must be getting cars over there somehow. It's pretty easy to get around there without a car anyway, just use the minbak vans as taxis.
You'd pretty much have to stay overnight. |

Down my way beaches seem to be a prime place to dump your garbage.
Had a BBQ/bonfire on one last weekend and when we came back the next day to clean up and erase our tracks the Koreans watched us in amazement. |

deok jeok do (aka party island) can be git at on car from the ferry (launcing at 9:30am, 2pm as of june 3rd) at dae bu do. dae bu do is the first stop on the shi-wha sea wall. the shi-wha sea wall is near the town of oido. the town of oido is near the last stop, oido station, on the light blue/4line. go early (90 minutes or 2hrs?) cuz you have to line your vehicle up.
sopari beach (on party island) is a good place for fires and camping. there are a few motels and minboks, a few small stores, and a few restaurants. the beach is huge, the sea is shallow, the best swimming is around the corner to the right where there is a sandy bottom and rocky cove. |

If I wanted to take a taxi to the ferry to go to Deokjeokdo, how could I explain the location (in Korean or English)? |

Crusie down to the area around Daecheon. Amnyeondo is a beautiful area.....get a ferry to Sapsido. Takes about 1.5 hours from Daecheon ferry port. When I went there was foriegner who owned cabins ontop of the cliff overlooking the nicest beach you'll see in Korea.....amazing glowing algae at night as well. The beach is on the other side of the island from where you arrive. |

I was in Goje for two months, April and May, and got around by motorbike with nothing to do all day but explore. And of the beaches I noticed the best ones were in the north and south of the island. The middle of the island is busiest, and this (when I was there) was offseason. That said these ideal beaches were competely deserted. One had a fisherman and his wife picking grotties out of their fishing nets spread out. The view, particularly at the beach down near Daedunsan, was awesome. Seagulls playing and calling so that you can practically begin to understand their seagull-language (only sound beside the lap of the sea). Beautiful, green mountainsides lining up to be appreciated ringing the beach, in the distance, in a protective arc. I think that beach near Daedunsan is called Myeongsa or something like that. It's down south and on the East coast. These are natural beaches and they just don't get any use until Korean tourist season, which is only a peak couple of months. |
