Study says millions have 'rage' disorder
By LINDSEY TANNER, AP Medical Writer
Mon Jun 5, 5:00 PM ET

CHICAGO - To you, that angry, horn-blasting tailgater is suffering from road rage. But doctors have another name for itintermittent explosive disorder and a new study suggests it is far more common than they realized, affecting up to 16 million Americans.

"People think it's bad behavior and that you just need an attitude adjustment, but what they don't know ... is that there's a biology and cognitive science to this," said Dr. Emil Coccaro, chairman of psychiatry at the University of Chicago's medical school.

Road rage, temper outbursts that involve throwing or breaking objects and even spousal abuse can sometimes be attributed to the disorder, though not everyone who does those things is afflicted.

By definition, intermittent explosive disorder involves multiple outbursts that are way out of proportion to the situation. These angry outbursts often include threats or aggressive actions and property damage. The disorder typically first appears in adolescence; in the study, the average age of onset was 14.

The study was based on a national face-to-face survey of 9,282 U.S. adults who answered diagnostic questionnaires in 2001-03. It was funded by the National Institute of Mental Health.

About 5 percent to 7 percent of the nationally representative sample had had the disorder, which would equal up to 16 million Americans. That is higher than better-known mental illnesses such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, Coccaro said.

The average number of lifetime attacks per person was 43, resulting in $1,359 in property damage per person. About 4 percent had suffered recent attacks.

The findings were released Monday in the June issue of the Archives of General Psychiatry

Its due to the loss of mans relationship with nature.

Seriously..there was a study done some time ago that proved stress is closely related to unnatural, man-made & urban environments.

Its triggered visually.

- people wre showed pictures of mountains, rivers and other natural landscapes. their heart rates slowed and they became more relaxed.

others were shown pictures of cityscapes with jagged outlines of buildings, traffic etc. they immediately showed signs of stress etc.

have you read EM forster/ his philosophy is along these lines.

How did Neal Stephenson put it in "SnowCrash?" Ah yes: "Poor Impulse Control". If you commit some sort of crime in a rage they tattoo it on your forehead as a warning for others. "Fair dinkum, mate!" as they (probably only ever) say (in movies about) Australia.

Do you remember the good old days when the horn-blowing tailgater was just some a** with no self control? Or the drunk person acting out on a plane was just called a drunken idiot and arrested? Nowadays there are so many stupid labels for this stuff, and it all seems to be meant to detract from peoples responsibility for their actions.

Someone is drunk on a plane, insults maybe even assaults a stewardess and defecates in the aisle. Not his fault, air rage.

A driver is angry at the car in front of him, cuts them off and attacks the person. not his fault, road rage.

Then you had the case back in the late 90's where a gunman shot up a subway car and his lawyer pleaded not guilty because of racial rage.

Next will be what, my son isn't a bully he has playground rage?

I could not agree more.

I had a philosophy prof in Uni who used to say "I think personal responsibility is a right-wing, redneck idea". Sadly, most of the people in Canada/America agree with him.

Reminds me of the "20th" hijacker, who when listening to his lawyer talk of how he was abused by "British society" stood up and yelled "This is American BS".
