Today in the internet room i saw a typically hesitant korean wondering how painful it would be to sit next to a wey-guk (moi).
So i put on a big show of acting all nervous and moving my chair as far away from him as possible, covering my face and not looking at him etc. hahaha

Any good ones out there?

Not trying to mess with their heads but this is just something I've noticed.

I've found whenever I take out my iPod on the subway and watch a movie a lot of people will start actually getting fidgety and practially go into convulsions trying to get me to notice that they have a cell phone (yawn). Don't know why some people react like that but it's funny as all hell.

The only prank I played in a PC bahng was when I was really sick of the obnoxiously loud video game sounds and 500 random pop songs playing around me. I found the Peanut Butter Jelly Time song and turned the speakers up almost as loud as they would go. All the dudes around me were visibly uncomfortable, and a few said "aiSSSHHH". The song was almost finished playing when the guy from the front desk came up to me and I pretended to misunderstand him as requesting me to turn the volume up, so I did that and then just started going back to whatever I was doing. So he clarified by saying DOWN DOWN, and then turning it down some for me.

If you've never heard that song, you may not understand how irritating it can be.

After he turned the speakers down and left, I turned them up a little bit and then just kept repeating the opening part (IT'S PEANUT BUTTER JELLY TIME, PEANUT BUTTER JELLY TIME, PEANUT BUTTER JELLY TIME, PEANUT BUTTER JELLY TIME) over and over again, laughing hysterically the whole time. You know how much laughing can get on Koreans' nerves.

Man they must have thought I was crazy.

I had a guy on the subway the other week who was so desperate for me to see he had a phone he put the thing closer to my face than his. Then he started swearing in English over and over, I suppose to show me his fantastic grasp of the language.

Another fun thing to do is to go shopping in Itaewon (or any area where the sales clerks probably speak English) and request things that are completely non-sensical. For example:

- At the shoe store. "Yes, I'm looking for the new Nike Slave-diggers."

- At the convenience store. "Do you have any Turkish Welders?"

- At the clothing store. "I'm looking for the Rattle Roller Derby."

- At the bag store. "Do you have anything that isn't gay?" "No, that one's realllly gay. I'm looking for a bag that's not gay."

It's really funny how far they'll go to accomodate your absurd requests. The thing is, though, you can't laugh or else the gig is up. You have to act truly disappointed that they don't carry the Blue size of your favorite pair of shoes that you otherwise would've bought.

Yes a couple of weeks ago when I was feeling less than amused with Korea and Koreans in general for various reasons, an ajumma sat next to me on the subway. This woman had the foulest kimchi breath you can imagine. Now back home Korean students were always complaining about how students of other nationalities smelled and telling me how fragrant and hygenic Koreans were. So I sat with my hands clapped over my face and nose and tried to look very obviously repulsed. As the train drew further out of Seoul and started to empty she and her husband dashed for seats on the far side of the train.

Yeah, and I'm the nut, eh?!

Great post! Classic! You're alright after all. Yeah, I suppose that I should remove you from my own, well, People to Off list. You know, the sort that Steve Buscemi's character in Billy Madison had in his hand when Adam Sandler's character, Madison, called him to apologise for being such an emotional bully back in high school. ;)

Now go out and get wasted! It is still Sunday over there, and so you might as well make the most of your weekend, eh.

Why am I perpetually followed by weirdos online...

Identity, Roch, Flotsam... Even at other sites, I attract them, in droves. It's like I've got a sign on my virtual forehead that says "Crazies Welcome".

I was sitting with a friend in an orange kimbap restaurant next to four business men. They all decided it would be awesome to listen to the ringtones on their phones and choose new ones. So that went on for a few minutes . . . usually generic midi stuff peppered with n'sync or Michael Jackson or Scott Joplin . . . so my friend pulls out his phone after a few minutes and starts to go through all his ringtones. The Koreans looked at him like he was sleeping with a fan on.

I've had pretty much the same thing happen, trying to shove it near my face and everything. Hilarious until it's annoying, especially when they're barking at someone on the other end of the line. I just turn up the volume even more and they eventually give up when they see from the video that I'm not listening to K-pop.

I don't get it. It's like some of these people actually think cellphones or digital cameras were invented in "tech-savvy Korea" and not the west/Japan. Yes, dude, we know what a cellphone is, we invented them, remember?
