Hi,

I've read a few times that it is customary to take your Korean colleagues out to eat every week, is this really true? I plan to take them out when I first get paid because they have been so helpful in my first weeks here.
Am I really expected to do this every week?

Not to take them out but to go out with them. If my boss is coming, I would never pay.

And you needn't go every single week, either. Once a month or so is enough.

It is a good idea to offer to pay a fair part of the time. Nothing will be said if you don't, but no one likes a sponge.

My Korean guide book said that you should take out the coworkers after your first paycheck, but didn't really mention it after that. From what I understand, the oldest person usually pays in the standard 'eating out' senario.

I tried to get them to come out with me after that first month, told them it was on me, but they didn't really seem that in to it, so I didn't press it. They're a somewhat quiet and reserved bunch.

We never take each other out. Once a month the Principal puts 20,000 into everyones bank account and we go out and all pay dutch - or not go.

Defitnly a 'fair' system - but it all seems a little impersonal and un-koreanish.

i took my co workers out for lunch to say thanks for helping me with getting my arc/cell phone and other things like that
they felt kinda weirded out that i suggested it but i wanted them to know how grateful i was for their help (and for their personal time they took to do it)...it was a nice gesture and was well recieved

i also buy them coffee or stuff from the bakery from time to time as well..

i think that taking them out every week is someone seriously trying to pull your leg!!! i think that maybe if you do go out socially in a group from time to time its nice if you pick up the check or a round of drinks or the norae bang bill

:O) Razz

It is the way of asians to be generous and hospitable, for closer ties. Food is the most common and easiest way.
