So I will be in SE Asia for three weeks in July. I happened to notice that the Full Moon party will be taking place on the 13th (i think) and i was wondering if anyone had experience with this and if it was worth checking out.

Is it all sex, drugs and rock and roll or more of a laid back chilled atmosphere which still has lots of partying going on? Any experience or advice on this would be appreciated. Thanks.

Yep, despite what the website logo misleadingly seems to imply, this is Koh Phangan:

Find friends in that crowd.

Never been to the full moon party, and I doubt I ever will. Thousands of foreigners who pretend to be travellers who spend the night drinking and getting high. Lots and lots of trash everywhere, primarily because the locals don't do a very good job at organizing it (no bins).

It looks like Daytona Beach if Florida had hills.

Ive been a few times alright- the island gets absolutely filthy as thousands flock from the neighbouring islands- bear in mind if you go you'll unlikely get a bed on the island if you arrive close to a fullmoon party.

They're an experience alright, yes lots and lots of drugs,- pills, mushrooms and various prescription drugs,, pretty crappy music for the most part(hard house trance, although once i was there and there was a metalheadz area-druma dnbass which was good)

Apart from that, no id say theyre pretty shit. If you're in the area, why not but i wouldnt go off your route especially for one, you wont miss it

Its a shame cos Ko Pha ngan is a wicked island although most of the bums that go there dont get far past that shithole of a beach Hat rin where the party is...

Everybody uses the sea for pissing and puking in. It's foul. Stay away!

I'm on Ko Pha Ngan now.

The place is pretty much dead with the exception of locals.

It's low season and the weather is pretty good still, hot but with some showers in the late afternoon and evening.

Anyone over in Pha Ngan / Samui now?

everyone needs to attend a full moon party at least once. i did and have no desire to go back, but don't regret it. i'm getting a little too old for that scene.

there is a cheap speed boat that goes from samui.

or, arrive on pag ngan a few days before and book a room.

no lodging is available the night of the party, but you can sleep on the beach (leave all valuables/ cards, etc) someplace safe as people will pick your pockets.

I love a good rave, but the full moon party at Hat Rin is over rated and attending one is quite an effective way of making you dislike all other foreign backpackers; using the beach/sea as a bathroom etc.

But if you are on the island, check out bottle beach, you can only get there by boat and it consists on one very relaxed resort in an enclosed bay. Really good memories of the place. Full moon party, not so much.
