Perhaps a few more choices should be added to alabamaman's poll.

Once a month for all my students, but for the lower level ones I often give small spelling or vocab tests once a week. If spelling or vocab is particularly bad, then it's test time every day. I wish I could have more time between tests, just so that the students have more time to let the information sink in, but the mothers want regular tests. I sometimes have to scale the students' scores too, just so that they won't come back to the hakwon with bruises.

I've come to the conclusion that there are only a few grading options available to an EFL teacher in Korea: B, B+, A or A+ (Good, Very Good, Excellent or Outstanding). This grading scale applies to hagwons, public schools and unis. Sure, you could give GyoungHo or EunJi the grade he or she deserves and, after endlessly suffering the consequences, be forced by your boss to change it anyway. Surprised
