Here's the goods, folks!
Time: June 11th, 2:00 pm. (If you want to come earlier and sit in the sun, please do!)
Place: Anyang-si, Surri-san. To get here you can take the subway to Anyang station and:
a) catch a cab (10 min)- ask for "Shin Sung godung hakgyo" (Shinsung High School). about 2,500-3,000 won depending on traffic.
b) be ambitious and catch a bus from the station (15 min)- #2 village bus. It will take you to the foot of the hill but then it's a 10 min climb to the main gate and ya probably don't wanna do that.
When you get to the main gate, sometimes the security guys will open it to let you through, depends if they are there or doing the rounds. I will let them know I have some friends coming so hopefully no problem. If you take the cab through the gates, the road swings to the right, around the gym, and then you take a sharp left at the corner. DO NOT GO DOWN THE HILL, GO UP!!! You travel up the road for about 3 min, past all the buildings and then the road gently curves to the right. There is a parking lot with an administration building, and it's the last building before the mountain trails. I'll mark it with balloons or ribbons. When you look at the building, the dorms are to the left, and that's where you'll find me. Room 2 or 3. I'm sure i'll be outside with the puppies. If you show up and no one is there, keep walking up the hill and you will see a Pagoda-like structure with a field. Some others may be there.
If you have to walk, it's only 5 min with a slight incline. Same directions.
note: We are near a fun market (close to Anyang station) called "Il bong ga" that has some great shopping and some delicious restaurants if you have time.
To bring:
-meat: there is a butcher near the bottom of the hill. I'm not sure if he is open on Sundays, but someone could always do a run to Emart. it's only a 2,500 taxi ride away. If you bring meat, then I have a fridge where you can store it. I will also have one grill, but depending on how many people show, this might not be enough. If you have one, truck it along...
-BBQ stuff: things you would like to eat at the BBQ. Maybe some fruit, chips, etc. I will make some salads if you PM me you are coming. I make a wicked shredded cabbage caesar salad.
-water: The water is safe to drink from the taps on the basketball courts, and if you walk up the hill towards the pagoda-like structure, there are taps for a spring there, too.
-booze: There are plenty of small markets to buy booze at the bottom of the hill, so if you run out, it's easy to restock. I'll provide the ice bath.
-blanket: I have 2 foamy blankets, but there is lots of grass, some benches, some stones, etc. to sit on. Maybe bring a towel?
-bug spray: lots of mosquitos in certain areas, but generally not bad. If you have some wear/bring it.
-sunblock: always.
-change of clothes: You probably want a t-shirt and slightly longer pants if you hike to deter the bugs. After a sponge bath at the spring, it's nice to have something fresh.
-camera: There are some amazing Buddha prayer rock structures along the way. There is also a sorta shorter walk to a large war monument that's unexpectedly stuck on a ridge. Makes for cool pics. The slightly longer hike gives you an amazing look at the surrounding areas.
If you think of anything else, please add it to the list. If you are coming, PM me and I will give you my cell #. This way if we are up the mountain I can tell you how to join us, or let you know what's going on. I think my boyfriend will probably stay down the bottom to "meat" and greet, so whenever you show up is fine.
I probably went a little overboard with the directions. It really is easy to get here! Hope to see you on June 11th!!!! |

Thanks. Can't wait to meet everyone. |

I was wondering that. Is there somewhere to shelter if the weather turns bad?

Is this a dog oriented sort of thing? Or is it more of a human thing with a 40% posibility of dogs. Also, where do you buy insect repelent? Do pharmacies stock it? Even if I don't make it I might start wearing it to bed.

It's a "human thing with a 40% posibility of dogs". There is a place to shelter, but it only has a roof. Mind you, the breeze is awfully nice in the warm weather! I find that up here there will usually be breaks in the weather, too. Sunny, cloudy, rain, sunny, cloudy rain...
There is also our apartment as a possibility, if there are not too many people, or a hallway party in the dorm (our dog loves it when we throw the ball down the length, so the puppies will be happy)?!?! There's not too much worry about shelter. Just bring a windbreaker and booze to keep you warm, some meat and munchies, and we can rough it (relatively). I draw the line at frizzy hair, though...(stupid humidity)...
Insect repellant can be found at most pharmacies, in aerosol form. You can also buy it at Walmart, HomePlus, and most big markets. Surprisingly enough, the lotion form works really well, too. I have beyond sensitive skin and I get no bad reactions. It's slightly oily feeling, and scented, but it makes your skin really soft. It's nice cuz a little bit goes a long way.
I'm willing to give it a try if it's raining, or thundering. Just RSVP by PM if you're coming... |

Just wondering what people think about going ahead tomorrow. I am a little concerned about the rain. It rained in Bundang for over 24 hours and there is a lot of puddles and such around. I am concerned that were we are supposed to be going will be in a similar situation. The reason I am concerned is because I need to take a taxi/ or rent a car for the day and I really don't want to do that if Indy is going to be dirty and wet.
I will wait until tomorrow morning and see if the weather predictions are correct. The AFN network says it's supposed to get better tomorrow and there is supposed to be no rain in the forcast. I have never seen as much thunder and lightning as I did these past two days. (And I am from Vancouver where it rains ALOT) |

Hello Everyone,
As the weather has decided to do it's own thing again, raining that is, I have decided that Indy and I will not be attending today's event. I think we should reschedule and try for another day. I know that MOPTOP was truly excited about having everyone there, but I am just in no mood to take Indy out in this mess.
I would be game to try another day though....any thoughts? |

The weather here is pretty nice right now (Sunday 1pm). It's cloudy, but no sign of rain. The parking lot is drying up, and i'm sure the rock field by the pagoda is fine, too.
I've had some replies that a few people will be coming rain or shine. I'm willing to go ahead if anyone wants, cuz I gotta walk the dog up the mountain, anyway. And i'm always up for a meat BBQ!!!! Just PM me and i'll send you my cell #. If I don't hear from anyone in the next few hours, you are on your own!
hope to see you here... |
