Film Trailer: The Da Vinci Code
Tom Hanks and Audrey Tautou star in the film adaptation of Dan Browns best-selling novel.
Cinema Release Date: Friday, 19 May 2006

Dan Browns ridiculously successful novel has remained on best seller lists for over a year now due to its combination of a traditional international murder mystery and 2000 years of esoterica culled from Western History. It has sold 25 million copies worldwide and has been translated into 44 languages, spawning dozens of copycats, knock-offs, spoofs, debunkings, rebunkings, games, telly programmes and now, naturally, a movie.

I look forward to the tie-in novelisation ...

A Glimpse Inside a Catholic 'Force': Opus Dei
by Terry Gross

Opus Dei describes the group's reach in eight different countries: Italy, the United Kingdom, the United States, Peru, Spain, Kenya, Uganda, and Finland.

Fresh Air from WHYY, November 28, 2005 Opus Dei is an international lay Catholic group whose core ideal is the sanctification of work. But critics and some former members have accused the group of having cult-like practices and promoting a right-wing agenda.

Opus Dei was founded in Spain in 1928; today, it has 84,000 members in 80 countries.

For many, the group first gained wide attention when it was portrayed in Dan Brown's best-selling novel, The Da Vinci Code. The thriller depicted the group as a repository for arcane knowledge and fervent -- even dangerous -- belief.

'Da Vinci Code' to Open at Cannes
Mon Jan 23, 6:39 PM ET

PARIS - Case cracked: "The Da Vinci Code" will be the opening-night movie at the Cannes Film Festival in May, organizers said. Based on Dan Brown's esoteric thriller about code-breaking and conspiracy, the film will debut at the Riviera festival and in French theaters on May 17, the festival said Saturday.

The rest of the world will have to wait two days, until May 19.

The adaptation by Oscar-winning director Ron Howard ("A Beautiful Mind") has an international cast led by Tom Hanks and Audrey Tautou.

Like the novel, the movie is set largely in France: The story line opens with the murder of the curator of the Louvre Museum in Paris.

Early this month, the Louvre said the movie's producers were trying to decide between the museum and the Cannes festival as a site for the European premiere. The movie will not be in the running for prizes at Cannes.

Hong Kong's Wong Kar-wai, director of "In the Mood for Love," presides over this year's jury at the festival, which runs May 17-28. Organizers at the glitzy festival try to strike a balance between crowd-pleasers and critically acclaimed films, and between Hollywood blockbusters and art house flicks.

Thank god for the movie. The US is finally getting a paperback version of the book! That's right. For the past 2 1/2 years if you are in the US you were stuck getting the hardcover.

A friend of mine's sister (a medical doctor) has been lost to that Opus Dei cult for years now. Most of her earnings go to Opus Dei as well.
She won't visit or communicate with her family because in her eyes they're all dirty heathens (depsite being Catholics).

Sad really.

That guy Robert something-or-other who was convicted of treason for spying in the US was a member. Makes you wonder hey.

He was an FBI guy. Apparently he would take a bunch of secret videos of him having sex with his wife (he was a big fat guy) and try to get his friends to watch his videos.

A very appealing piece of pulp for the Community College set and dullards alike. This book reaffirms my belief that women are in general, dumb.

A book that has been widely successful isnt good enough for some. Very good, but why show your self perceived superiority about it? Shouldnt that be natural for all to see?

There is a difference between a well written book, and a successful book, shocking but true.

That was pretty cool considering that I still can't shut down the Vader noises coming out of my computer after viewing that SithSense website.

It's like the Catholic church is Empire.

Yes, a very poorly written book. Detective stories aren't very thrilling when every plot twists and turns are clearly advertised before they occur. The whole time I was reading it, though, I thought it would be succesful as a movie, albeit a popcorn movie. It's fitting that Ron Howard is directing it.

yeah when I was reading it my thinking flipped between
"Oh man, this is so badly written" and
"Just one more chapter, then bed- definitely"
