|
My contract ends next month, as does my coworker's. My coworker has already approached our manager about rehire and has been offered rehire. My coworker wants to take a month long holiday first though.
As I said my contract ends at the same time as my coworkers so the school would be in dire straits losing two teachers at the same time. I was asked by my manager if I intend to seek rehire with my current school or look elsewhere, she know that I have been looking at other schools lately because her attitude led to the loss of one of our teachers resulting in me losing a week of vacation and earning an extra month of split-shift.
She wants me to let her know for certain by this coming Friday if I want to stay at the school, but she says she won't let me know if I can be renew my contract until 2 weeks later. She also wants to know if I will stay an extra month at the school regardless of whether or not I am offered a new contract, to cover for my coworker who wants to take the holiday.
I am just dumbfounded at the audacity of this woman. How can she expect me to accept this load of crap. Why should I have to tell her I want to stay and then sweat it out for another two weeks to see if she will rehire me? What the f*ck?
I am one of the best teachers there and she knows it. She is pissy with me because I quit kissing her ass when I realized what a jerk she can be. I do my job and I don't cause problems, I just avoid talking to her, I used to be friendly with her...
She also went on to say that if I extend my current contract to cover my worker's holiday that she will give me a very positive recommendation for my next school... so does that mean if I don't bend over and take it in the *ss she is going to say I'm a bad teacher....
again... wtf?

She wants to have her cake and eat it too.
Tell you what. Sign on for one more month. Sign now, not in two weeks, and get the stamp approval and whatnot in your passport and on your ARC from immigration. Then make sure you collect your severence and regular month's pay as soon as the 12th month is up. Get her to pay you weekly during this 13th month. Make it a term in your contract.
Problem solved. |

My quick answer in a word would be, "Chal ga."
Just tell her you are NOT re-signing. You will be finished when your contract ends and let her worry about covering classes. It is NOT your responsibility OR OBLIGATION.
Don't worry about a letter of recommendation. It ain't needed or necessary. Just make sure you have a scan of your current E2 to prove that you were working here as a teacher for that year.
If your new employer asks about your past employment, just say they closed due to excessive competition and lack of teachers.

Yeah, you don't need no stinking reference. But you do need your money. You'd be helping her out of a jam and you will have peace of mind that you're getting all your earned cash if you do what I told you.
If there is no worry about getting the money that's due to you, however, I'd just tell her that you can't re-sign. She has a lot of nerve. It's sign now or don't sign at all. |

I would say "Let me know when I can renew my contract and I'll give you my answer then." It's a power game. If you ask for renewal now she'll think "Aha I have him in my power, I'll just let him sweat for a couple of weeks."
I'd make her tell me first, whether she wants me to resign or not. Then I would say "I'll give you my answer....in a couple of weeks". |

Is there a tactful and culturally sensitive way to do this, I still have one month remaining and don't want to be miserable. |

I would agree with all of the replies. It sounds like she wants a commitment from you, but then still wants to shop around for something better (or cheaper). If she finds it, then your commitment means nothing and you will be discarded like a used tissue.
The bottom line is, yes, be tactful and be aware of cultural sensitivities, but at the same time recognize that you are only important to you, not to her. So, look out for number one. There is no sense nor honor in disrespecting people here. The fact that you are asking these questions suggests to me that you already have the skills (and yes, diplomacy is a skill) to deal with your situation. |

Very good idea. Following this I would tell her that you've received several offers and will have to wait until you have her offer as well before you decide. |

My contract ends July 31st but my ARC doesn't expire until August 16th. I managed to get an 11 month contract when I signed on because I intended to go to graduate school this year.
One more month at that place knowing that I was only a scab would make me a bit angry, especially considering it will probably be another hellish month of split-shift. |

If you dont want to work it, then don't work it. The other side of that is that if you work the extra month, making it a twelve month commitment, then you should be eligible for severance, equivalent to a months pay. Does that make it worth it?: |

I was told I was eligible for severance and flight reimbursement on my 11 month contract... is there some national policy that would prevent this?
On a related side note, why do I need sealed transcripts again? If I was a legitimate teacher here already and have my E2 to prove it, why do I have to go through the additional ordeal of begging my university to release my transcripts to my mom (their policy is that they only release them to the alumni in person). |

Why??? Because it is an immigration requirement.
Every time you apply for a new visa you go through the same process all over again "each and every time". This means a new certified copy of your degree AND a new "Sealed" official transcript.
No process = no visa...
5 years and 5 times I have had to go through the same process. They have 5 original, certified copies of everything in my file. Welcome to Korea. |

| What about my severance? Is there some loophole they can take advantage of to weasel out of that? |

If it's in your contract that you get it after 11 months, it's a sealed deal. There's no law that goes against that. |

YUP... Korean labor law says that they do NOT have to pay if you are employed for less than 1 full year. It is only required to pay the extra month salary for service of more than one year.
The rate is 1 month severance for each and every FULL year of employment. It is NOT prorated for partial years.
