Hi there!
My school has just started an adult class (well, so far there is only one student!) and it's up to him and I to make the lesson plan. He is going travelling next year, so he wants the main focus of his study to be talking about Korea in English. For example, talking about Korean food in detail, Korean culture, Korean history, etc etc. I just wondered if anyone has had a similar situation, or knew of any teaching materials that would fit this class. It's also my first time teaching an adult so not quite sure yet how to go about correcting him when the time comes.
If anyone has any help/advice, it would be much appreciated!!
thanks,
dean. |

There is so much to say but I don't have that much time. Will mention just the important things....
Keep the discussion rolling by using photos. REALLY helps when one on one. Good for eliciting vocab and taking discussions into other places...
Don't get heavy into grammatical explanations despite his wish/protest. Maybe you will be lucky and he won't want you to "explain" . Cool but if he should, just offer a simple explanation and focus on production , practical production.
Each lesson should have a theme, work around that with activities/pictures and using grammatical structures. For example, if the theme is travel .......focus on did/past tense usage......talk about travel/ last trips.
One on one --- focus the first number of lessons indirectly on question making...........the student needs to feel empowered in how to ask questions. This is often overlooked by many teachers and they then wonder why discussion isn't two way and real communication. To have real communication and not just socratic leading, prying, you need to give the student the basic tool of practicing giving the questions to you.....turn the tables...
Okay , got to run. Cheers and when I have time will post some good ideas for one on ones....PS. there are many good picture books for eliciting response. I have my own library from newspapers / magazines............

Pagoda has some SLE books that (at the higher level) might help you out with Korean issues. |

It sounds like you don't have much adult teaching experience. I would suggest investing an afternoon at a bookstore to find a text that you think you and your student can work with.
Also, I just set up a resource website (link below) - go and look at the A-Z listings for some ideas and useful sites to get you started. |
