I was wondering what kinds of questions you ask your potential hakwon, or whoever is trying to hire you.

I figure the main thing is getting an email address from a teacher who currently works there...

Anyother suggestions?

If you want to get hired, don't ask any. If you don't, post the contract here and and ask for a critque. Now, tell the employer you will not sign unless every request/change that Grotto suggested be agreed too... Very Happy

Try to get the email of every teacher working there, and be careful, as they might be short-staffed and say anything to get another teacher to cut down on their workload.

If it were a hogwan, I would ask:

- What time of day do the teachers arrive and when do they leave?
- Do I have to prepare homework assignments and write report cards? If so, how often?
- Could you send me some photos of my accomodations and the classrooms / staff room.
- How many students has your hogwan expelled?
- What happens when a student swears at a teacher?
- Do students speak to foreign teachers using banmal (informal) or formal Korean. E.G. if a student doesn't know something does he tell the teacher 'mullah' or 'mull-i-oh'?
- What's your total attendence and what was your attendence last year and the year before?
- How old are your youngest students? I.E. in what year were they born? If they're 'six years old' does that mean they were born in 1999 / 2000 or 2001?
- How many teachers have re-signed after one year was finished?
- How long does it take to walk from my apartment to the hogwan?

Those are just a few that come to mind.

Above questions are good but, irrelevent. You ever heard of lying? Just figure out what you want as far as a job goes and have everything you want written in English in the contract and stamped in blood! Shocked

What would you say/do if students were complaining that your foreign teacher's class was "boring"?

What is your policy on playing games in the classroom?

What curriculum do you follow? What books do you use? (If they say, "We just let our teachers do whatever." it means they don't have a clue)

If a student was spitting in class, giving me a dong-chim, or just generally being a shit, how would we handle it?

How many hot young Canadian girls are working there? Are they single?

What kind of resources does the school have? Things like picture cards, extra books, games all come in handy.

How long are the classes? 50 min, 40min, 20 min?

What age are the students? kindy - middle school?

Are you allowed to use things other than the textbook? Things like pop songs, magazines etc.

What size are the classes? If they are bigger than 10 and kindergarten---beware. (of course if you feel you are able to handle them...go for it)

How much freedom do teachers have to create their own lesson plans?

Whether you prefer to create your lesson plans or just go with the teacher's book script, that is the best way to ask that question.
