Need lessons on reusable bags

Recycling not yet in the bag
June 12.
Having moved here relatively recently from the United Kingdom, I brought with me my sturdy reusable grocery bags supplied by a leading U.K. food store. I have made several attempts to use them in my local supermarket but at each attempt have flummoxed the cashier. I have now given up despite the fact that I can't believe the waste incurred by the use of plastic bags; sometimes I only have two or three items placed in a bag. I try to minimize the amount of bags by putting everything on the conveyor belt grouped by product, such as can and jars, fruits and vegetables, dairy, bakery goods etc., but still I come home with about 20 bags for a $120 shop when I could easily pack all of this neatly into my three reusable bags.
If the supermarkets are trying to help the environment they need to re-educate their staff and let us pack our own bags without making us feel as though we are totally mad foreigners with quirky ways. I commend the stores that are trying to improve things, but maybe they need to take a few lessons from elsewhere.

Heck, a Brit (not too different from Canadians, eh?) feels foolish and is looked upon as weird in Canada for doing something that seems completely logical to her. I know this is how we feel alot of the time, trying to figure out why Koreans do the things they do and why they just don't see why we are trying to do it a different way. Still, this gives a bit of perspective as it is a personal opinion. |
