Wednesday I had a conversation that went like this:

Quote:
Girlfriend: My dad was so happy with Korea's win he gave everyone in the family man won.

Me: You mean he gave you your own money back.

Girlfriend: What?

Me: Well, you give him half your salary. So he's only giving you some of your own money back.

Girlfriend: You... you... I was kind of happy... but now... you're... you're...

Me: We call people like me a "buzz kill". Sorry.

Hey, I've been into the FT's Ask the Economist lately.

Done anything lately to kill a person's buzz, be it about the World Cup or anything else?

(I went to a friend's wedding last weekend. She's Swiss and married a Korean guy. There were some World Cup jokes, naturally. Anyway, she wore a hanbok. By way of a compliment I said to her "you look way way better than Britney Spears in a hanbok." I'm not sure if that qualifies as a buzz kill but I have a feeling since Britney white women have a fear about wearing hanbok and looking as dorky as her.)

My students (with smiles and enthusiasm): Teacher! Teacher! Australia won! Australia won! Hiddink number one! Hoju and Korea like brothers!

Me: We have to play Brazil next.

Students (minus the smiles and enthusiasm): Ooooooohhhh...

You don't neccessarily have to tell the truth to be a buzzkill, right?

Day after Korean Game:

(I can hear my university students chanting down the hall prior to my arrival. The chanting continued as I walked into class and took out the papers I needed to begin class. I could see the smiles on their faces... and had been hoping they would be frowns after Togo scored the opening goal the night before. I pull for the other teams by the way... every other team.)

Me: Good morning. That was a good win by the Korean team last night. Now... this is our last class until the final exam. I've got to tell you that the exam is 4 pages long and you've only got 50 minutes to complete it. So those of you who took 50 minutes to complete a 1 and 1/2 page quiz had better move much faster through the questions or you are not going to finish it. We're going to review some of the questions you had difficulty with today. Let's get to work.
