This might be slightly better suited for the Job Forum, but the boyz and girlz over here will be able to help me more with the data and we'll have more fun with it over here as well.

I am planning on doing a lesson basaed on the World Cup--I also have a pretty fun game that goes with it, let me know if you are interested, and I want to have a vocab section, so:

What kind of wacky Konglish soccer vocab can you think up? I know "goal-in" and I will be working on "Be the Reds" and "Fighting" but what else do you all hear from the announcers and fans?

The weirder and more obnoxious the better.

Cheers,

f

I liked how, in the last World Cup, the Korean sportscasters would always get tongue-tied and flummoxed when the opposing team came near to scoring on Korea. The action wasn't all that chaotic, but God help you if you were listening over the radio somewhere (like a cab) rather than watching it. Because all you'd hear was:

Sportscaster A: .... Shocked AAAAAAAA!! ..... Shocked ... AAAAAAA!!!! AAA!!! AAAAA!!! Shocked Exclamation AAAAA!!! Shocked

Sportscaster B: .... Shocked AAAAAAAA!! ..... Shocked ... AAAAAAA!!!! AAA!! AAAAA!!! Shocked Exclamation AAAAA!!! Shocked

I mean, COME. ON. !!! That shit 's what the fans are all screaming. I don't need to hear that from YOU. YOU'RE supposed to be the damned SPORTSCASTER! ... Rolling Eyes

And right, Zappadelta. I hate the stupid way they always say that. I wish we could use sound files here. It's not like a regular "man voice" -- it's this high-pitched squeaky voice... "shooooot!" Like an owl hooting. "shoooooot!" God, I hate that.

(This is really screwed up. Since a few months ago, every time I type something in hangul on Dave's, it comes out "?????".)

Dude, just watch a game on TV for like 5-10 minutes, you'll hear everything you need to know.

Dude you are right. I am a shortsighted poster and had already forgotten you provided "Shooooooooooooooooot."

I suck and will be offing myself shortly.

The word "ceremony" is used in Korea for what is typically called (I think) a celebration. That is, the way goalscorers celebrate after they score.

Also, "one-top" is used to describe a formation using only one striker.

This would be a good time to correct their gerund abuse.

"Fighting Korea" ---- fight korea, go korea? pilsun korea?
"heading" ---------- header, head shot

centering, instead of crossing.

While we are on the subject, there are plenty of American/Canadian corruptions that creep into the sporting lexicon of football here. Its not hockey damnit!

Football, not soccer
Squad, not roster
Attack, not offense
Support/follow, not root for
no such thing as a red zone in football, although that *beep* who used to commentate CL games on ESPN thought there was.
Assist is another one that chews me up.

that is all
