My Employer wanted 800,000 deposit for a small room or 1600,000 deposit for a large room. Both rooms had one year contracts. Since I was out of the country and couldn't see the rooms I took the small room. I would hate to sign a one year contract on a crapy room with 1600,000 deposit.
Then I got here and learned some things. In Korea, if you sign a one year lease, and then leave after 3 months, you still get your deposit money back (with my employers housing anyway). You may have to pay a small 'rerenting fee' (I don't), but you don't loose the deposit like in America. And the deposit money doesn't go for repairing damage when you leave. The Korean family in my apartment before me broke all kinds of things, but they got the full deposit back and fixing the things becomes my headache.
So I can't really tell you what the big deposits are for; but in my place, I get it back even if I don't complete the lease. It doesn't seem to be for damage repair either.
Given that information, you might ask the employee about the refund conditions and amount.
Thanks,
Drew

Because he/she wants to keep you from running. Or make it cost you, in case you do. They probably have a history of runners, and there's probably a reason for it. I'd be very, very weary of any employer that required a security deposit or made deductions from your paycheck to cover bills and damage. They'll have your last months pay and 1 months severance when you leave. Let them use that as the guarentee.

Your home country's laws don't apply in Korea. You're subject to the laws of the country in which you reside. Which of your "rights granted by the UN" are you giving up by paying a housing deposit?

Legally they can ask for a deposit. If they deduct it from your paycheck, that is illegal.

I would also be wary of any employer who asks for a deposit. I've never heard of 800,000 won deposit. That's outrageous!

It has buyer beware (or employee beware) written all over it.
