Inspired by billybrobby's post on the Quotes thread, I'd like to hear what you consider to be the stupidest names bestowed upon professional sports teams.
A sampling:
New York Knickerbockers
Toronto Raptors (My city finally gets an NBA franchise, and they name it based on the Jurassic Park hype. I voted for the Toronto Terriers, by the way. Really.)
Orlando Magic
Green Bay Packers

At least these names are based on local industry. I think the worst team names are relocated franchises. Such as:
Utah Jazz
Los Angeles Lakers |

A friend of mine graduated from Furman University and there mascot at one time was the Christian Knights. For obvious reasons they changed it to the Paladins. |

the NYU "Violets" were named after serious consideration of using "Pansies."

Being from Montreal, I always thought the Expos were a dumb name. I mean, sure the team was formed shortly after Expo '67, in Montreal, but come on!
I also like teams whose names represent something related to sports. The Colts suggest grace and strength, the Pirates, fierceness and mercilessness (if that's a word), the Hurricanes will come and destroy you and your town, that kind of thing.
So, in that vein, I totally agree that the Mighty Ducks sounds wimpy... |

Are there any Canadian sports teams called "The Lumberjacks" or "The Moose"? Seems like there should be... but maybe there aren't.
And no, I'm not joking or being hurtful. Please don't think that. |
