I received a phone call about a public school position in Seoul that is part of a newly introduced ESL program called the After School Program.
I was told I would be teaching elementary students at a public school from 1:00pm until 5:50pm and receive about 2.1 per month. Class size would be a maximum of 12 students.
What exactly is the "after school program"? Is anyone currently enrolled in it? Is it a good deal or just an over hyped program with a lot of hidden stipulations? Is it creditable or something that should be avoided? Can anyone please give me some information about it?

You would be teaching kids after school at public schools. It is a special program designed to improve children's English without going to hagwons.
I think I saw this job posting somewhere....I was going to apply but didn't~ |

| It might be fine but if they start telling you to open two bank accounts for payment purposes, I'd be a little wary of it all if I were you. |

I know someone who does it and it's an all right job (if you like elementary kids) and the hours are pretty good.
I can actually hardly wait to see more of these programmes up and running and putting the hogwans out of business. |

I think that if you're registered and paying appropriate taxes, then I would trust your set up much more than some of the ones I've heard about on here. You're basically doing the finances and the native speaker role while your friend is doing the recruiting and KT side of things, right? And, you're probably going to be paying her better than she would get elsewhere once you guys have enough clients, yes? |

Yea, thats my hook, plus much less abuse. The schools seem to cough up 3.8 million for the foreigner and then 1.5 million for the Korean teacher. I'd like 2.8 total and she/he can get the rest. My partner has a business degree but not an education degree. I'm not sure that matters to the Seoul schools but I guess that means shes good at business  so she might be able to swing a deal. |

If it is CharmedU or, it's seemingly latest incarnation, Kindedu, or its evident alter ego KidEdu, run by a lad named Jeffrey out of his apartment at Hannam-Obelisk, stay away. Unless you don't need to be paid, in which case I have an excellent opportunity for you.  |

I actually interviewed with him last year. He offered me 2.3 for 12-1prep, 1-5 teaching. There was no housing offered though. When I asked to speak to the current teachers, he insisted that he could not allow that, and tried to pressure me to sign the contract. He said, "I'm sure that you will have no problems teaching, all of the teachers really like their job, and all of the teaching materials have been made for you." This just goes to show you how important it is to talk to the other teachers at a school before signing the contract. |

They have after-school program positions. Offering single housing and between 2.0-2.3million a month. 1-6pm schedule Mon-Fri. |

Im still curious about these after school programs, for several reasons. If anyone has any info. regarding the points below I'd love a response....
a) Does the recruiter/company running the afterschool program sign a contract with the office of education? Any idea if so, what the office of education demands of them? I do know in many countries, the Min. of ed when outsourcing will demand many conditions. The contract is also public knowledge. Is this so in S. Korea./ Seoul?
b) What are the ramifications for hagwons in general if this trend is successful.? Any idea of the rational behind it, govt subsidized, after school education? Isn't it a financial disaster waiting to happen unless strict controls and monitoring are in place?
c). Do parents also pay? (I suppose they do but the office of Education chips in the balance). What kind of power do parents have in this relationship, where they are not paying the whole thing?
Any comments, especially about the contractual relationship between schools and the recruiters/companies offering the after school programs.

Yes, I interviewed with him in October; he started talking about two bank accounts and a 5% income tax. Sounded shady, so I walked. |

Regarding the after school programm some recruiters are legally allowed to do it for most of them is
#they want you to open 2 bank accounts
1 is your personal one
1 is where the recruiter has access to it and you dont
#WIN EDUCATION
becareful as they are known thugs in the industry , they are like a recruiter but they place in public schools around Seoul and supply all the ciriculum .
if you piss them off like closing there bank account like i did , they start making personal threats to you and your family if you are married to Korean
If you dont agree with them and give them no money it turns violent like it did with me , they hit like 4 times (they hit like girls ) and the principle said he does not care about your safety .
