My gf is interested in coming with me to the US later this winter. I thought there was an agreement between Korea and the US that offers 30 day tourist visas for one another. However, she keeps telling me that she needs to fill out a bunch of paperwork, because it's extremely difficult for a Korean to get a tourist visa. She is also a student, so she said that it's easier for students to obtain visas. Does anyone have any experience with this and the steps that we would need to take to get the visitor visa for her? thanks |

It is pretty tough.
My friend had really hard time getting a tourist visa for his wife. Good luck with that.
Contact the consulate/embassy for all the proper information. This site is useful, but you're better off going straight to the source to find out exactly what you need.

The consul looks at her ties to Korea to determine if she will return home.
If she is unwed, has a US boyfriend, has no significant personal assets in Korea then she has every reason to not return and lots of reasons to stay stateside. USCIS will assume she is trying to become an illegal immigrant or somehow take a shortcut to get around the k1/k3 fiance/spousal visa process (because of the long waits).
The chances of an unmarried Korean girl getting a tourist visa to enter the states with a US boyfriend are about 0 in 100.
It would be possible for her to get a student visa if she was accepted as a student at some accredited school AND she met the financial requirements.
Good luck. You'd be better off taking her for a vacation in Canada or Mexico. Koreans don't need a visa for Canada (6 months stamp on arrival) or Mexico (30 days on arrival).

Such are the joys of being from a country at war.
Best luck to you.... you will need it.
