What I remember most about Korea were some of the crazy expats.
For instance, in my little teaching company in Taejon, we had a guy who used to drink himself under the table. Then he'd sleep walk. While sleep walking, he would mumble the word lettuce over and over again.
He used to go to the bathroom--a number two--with the door wide open. He would also sit for hour upon hour in the communal kitchen sharpening a butcher knife. It was scary.
We had an ex-biker chick. She absolutely refused to wear panties. No kidding. She would go teach at middle schools in short dresses while wearing no underclothing. If one suggested that underwear was in order, she would fly off the handle.
Then we had another goof ball who would dress up as a Buddhist monk. I guess he spent some time in one of those temples. So there he was--as white as Casper--wandering through various public schools in his Buddhist robe.
Where do you find people like this?
It used to embarass me greatly. Don't get me wrong. I'm nuts myself. But these people were certifiable.
I guess what I'm saying is this: If I work for a company and I'm the normal one, then that usually means there is a problem. |

Sounds like you would have fit right in. They were all probably talking about how nuts you were behind your back...

Sub-par universities in Canada.
It is amazing what a free ticket to Asia and booze for a buck a bottle can do to motivate the lowest echelons of society... |

Yeah but sub-par western universities still blow away the best in Korea. |

Seems a bit of an exaggeration that. The lowest echelons of western societies are the noneducated, nonworking classes. You don't get those at any university and you certainly don't get them having the capacity or desire to teach English. |

Geez my friend (Korean) just took what seemed like a great job with SNU. Something about setting up and maintaining relations with American universities. The job would have required a lot of travel to the USA. A perfect job for a Korean woman who still lives at home. A chance to get away.
She quit after the third day. The office was totally forked. Nasty office politics from day one. Everyone was just out to maintain their petty kingdoms... |

Posting while intoxicated? Never! Posting while being up at 6am on a severe ( 8 strong cups ) coffee and cigarette ( one whole pack of marlboro lights ) jag. I got home from work at 9pm and logged on, that's 9 straight hours at the pc...
PS And another one coming on tonight, I can just feel it in my bones... |

Bingo!... I have a new freaky waegook (doesn't 'believe' in refrigerators... has built three houses in Texas out of telephone poles and bales of hay... and once crashed his boat into an oil rig (on purpose) after six days and nights of being at the tiller without sleep. However, this guy still doesn't beat the Saskatchewan girl who took 5 1/2 hrs. to (literally) cross the street. |

Long live the freaky waygooks!
The world would be a terribly boring place if we were all conformist, middle-class suburban herd creatures --aka, Physical and Primary Education majors... |

I think there should be a petition to put a sticky on the freakiest waygook thread.
It is just THAT timeless. |
