|
|
I have been having a hellish week at work and was awakened at 4 AM last night by the cheers of my neighbors. Actually it was quite more than cheers, it was screaming, chanting, drumming, etc.
Last night was my only night to get 8 hours of sleep this week.... being denied this because some teenyboppers and twentysomethings wanted to dress in red and wear there little horns and bark at the moon left me a little peevish. Especially considering I have to work today, a 6 day week of about 50 hours of split-shift.
My first plan was to go and get the ajoshi at the front desk, but I thought I had already heard another neighbor shuffle down the hall to ask for some quiet. When I got outside in the hallway I saw that they had their f*cking door open... 4AM screaming and chanting, with their door open...
I walked down the hall bleary eyed and pissed off. I saw about 12 people in a 10 pyong apartment... it was f*cking ridiculous... I motioned for them to close the door... hmmm... what a thought, I got a "sorry" and a nod... then I lost my temper and starting kicking the huge pile of shoes at the door into the apartment before I closed the door.
It was a little bit of a scene, but I could barely keep my eyes open.
I closed the door and yelled "Ba Bo !!" (idiot/dummy/stupid)
I walked back to my apartment, actually at the far end of the hall.
By that time some girl had decided that she wanted to confront me... she yelled for my attention I yelled back "Ba Bo !!" I think we glared at each other and then another girl pulled her back into the apartment.
They still raised hell but at least they kept the door closed.
OMFG
Should I feel guilty and tape an apology to there door?

Yeah, you should. This is their equivalent of the Brits winning the world cup, or a Canadian team winning the Stanley Cup, even though they haven't actually won anything yet.
Also, in Korea, as you know, their are zero noise-laws, and with the world cup, it is accepted that you can do Anything noise related and it is perfectly ok. In fact, the louder you are, the more patriotic.
That's why they had the door open. I would have felt like a world-class heel. By a Korean flag and some cheap "Go Korea" banners, or better yet, buy a couple pitchers of Hite, and make your offering.
Good Luck. NOw, go to bed. |

Well, at leat you won't have to listen to them again this world cup. If I were you, I'd just let it go. I doubt it'll happen again.
And also, you can be happy that they lost and your neighbors are probably very sad right now. |

I knew a guy who superglued a door closed once after a similar scene. He apparently did the doorknob, lock and all around the door.
Sounds like you were tired and annoyed. Sounds like they were a bit inconsiderate. Both are understandable I guess.
Sure...apologize, but they should (and probably will) as well. |

Considering your little footnote link takes us to these words

Get a Korean to write a note explaining your schedule and lack of sleep and attatch it to a bottle of something as a peace offering. |

Not true. They are, however, rarely enforced.

No, you did the right thing.
I had a neighbor in my last apartment building that kept her door open every night unitil 11pm or 12am. She was running some kind of business and people came in and out. Lots of loud talking sometimes. I complained several times to the building manager about it. Each time, she'd be good for a few days and then it would start all over again. I think some Koreans are very rude and have thick heads. Giving your neighbors a piece of your mind was the right thing to do. |

Noisy neighbors every night deserve a piece of your mind but this was a World Cup night. It happens once every four years. I would've let it go. |

I knew all that "love prevails" stuff would bite me in the ass some day. Like that "Serenity Now" episode of Seinfeld.
I do feel bad about it, and I wanted to be understanding but sleep deprivation does wicked things to people's moods, or at least mine.
I have consulted many of my coworkers, Korean and foreigner, they all advise me to let it be. They think I was justified and that the kids were just inconsiderate.
As I believe I mentioned a guy across the hall also went down to ask them to be quiet, or at least I thought I heard his door open and then some slipper shuffling followed by a quick return and closing of the door. He looks like a mild-mannered post-university type who gets up early also, they seemed to pay him no mind... perhaps I felt a little righteous in my anger for his sake as well.
I think I will leave one of those big bottles of Hite outside the door with a simple "mian hamnida hwaiting tae han min gook 2010 ^__^". |

I would apologise. I know you need your sleep but unless they are noisy and have parties regularly this was World Cup night. Its one night in 365 x 4 nights...ummm...(I teach english not maths thank goodness) once every 4 years, so hey.....
Think of it this way, the fact you wrote on the website means you feel maybe you should apologise....in a week will you still be pissed at the lack of sleep? or will you have gotten over it?
And atleast.. there are no more nights this year!!! |

You're a beotch. If you'd kicked my shite and called me crazy I'd have cranked the game up louder, found me the largest most obnoxious bullhorn possible and fanned kimchi farts under your door for the remainder of the evening.
Everyone here is nuts for World Cup. You could have showed up for work blasted out of your mind and your boss would understand. |
